More and more coats of tru-oil.
Next I will give it a good sand back to level the surface.
Then, when they arrive in the mail, I will try McCreed's technique with micromesh and micro-gloss polish.

I'll take credit if it turns out beautiful... but assume no responsibility if it goes horribly wrong! Then, when they arrive in the mail, I will try McCreed's technique with micromesh and micro-gloss polish.
It's not my technique, it's just the technique I use.
Also, I like your method of keeping track of the Tru-oil coats! And looking good too!

I didn’t think there was a problem with your first staining effort...but I like your second result better, nice red.
What is the red ink your are using Trevor? Did you source it locally?

Thanks McCreed, Dozy and Mark.
Mark the alcohol ink is Jacquard Pinata (Santa Fe Red) from Jackson Art supplies. Quite a few stores around Perth area and one is close to home.
Link is : https://www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/ja...ta-alcohol-ink.
They come in 14 ml bottles or 118 ml and are a decent price. A small bottle could do a guitar body - but I got a large one and have heaps left. I don't have much experience with stains, but it went on easily and did not run when adding tru-oil coats. I think they may be my goto!

Have given the body a wet micromesh treatment, then a polish with Maguires Ultimate compound and Scratch X.
I'm afraid I still have a lot to learn about applying finish. I think I need to be more brutal (but I don't want any burn through).
Still working on a logo for the head stock.

Looks very nice to me Trevor, I'd be very happy with that.

Looks to have a good gloss there. Look forward to final assembly!
You're not alone! I'm generally happy enough with the results I get, but none of them are flawless. I do seem to improve with each one, but it would take way more builds than I'm prepared to do to get to 100% every time!I'm afraid I still have a lot to learn about applying finish.
I have not used Meguiar's on Tru Oil before but have decided I don't like using it on acrylic lacquer. It polishes ok, but I don't like the way the finish feels after. Looking at the MSDS there are very small amounts of petroleum products in it (including naptha). Certainly enough that I can smell it. Not sure those ingredients are a good match with oil based or solvent based materials, but an expert or a chemist, I am not. I know lots of people use it and like like it so I'm sure I am a very small minority.
It may also be my imagination (of which I can have a very active one) but it also seems after the shine has "worn off" the finish appears more dull than before polishing. If that makes sense.
I've since decided my 3M Micro-Gloss polish works best for me.
