    Progress update 4 - The headstock - Part 2:

The fender template I used as the base for the shape has some shaping to do to the back of the headstock. Out came the wood rasp resulting in this:

Time for the sanding to start, so from 80 grit up to 320 and the resulting headstock is looking good:

Now before the final sand and the staining I want to look at reseating the frets. They all seem to be raised in the middle.

Any advice as well on sanding the fret board before finishing with clear dingo tone?

Hi Marze, headstock and neck re-shaping look good.
As for the high frets you should be able to re-seat them with a fret hammer or if you haven't got one a rubber mallet should work ok.

Make sure you support the neck underneath when you hammer them in.

I wouldn't put DT clear on the fingerboard, I'd put Dingowax or some sort of suitable neck oil.
You can always sand it to get a nice smooth feel
    Current Builds and status
scratch end grain pine tele - first clear coat on !
    JBA-4 - assembled - final tweaks
Telemonster double scale tele - finish tobacco burst on body and sand neck

    Completed builds
scratch oak.rose gum Jazzmaster - assembled needs setup
    MK-2 Mosrite - assembled - play in
Ash tele with Baritone neck - neck pup wiring tweaks and play in

Thanks wokkaboy, now to find a fret hammer , I think my rubber mallet is a little to big for the job. Its about 70 mm diameter.
I have some dingowax on the way so will sand smooth with some 600/1200 and apply the wax.

Hi Marze, yes ok the rubber mallet may be too large.
You can make a fret caul out of scrap wood, cut a curved groove on one side and place the caul over the high frets and knock down with a standard hammer but be acurate !

sounds like a good plan for the fingerboard

All I can say is I have the same kit and the same bleeding. As I apply the Dingotone it is less apparent.

Mark H - do you also see with yours that the quilted maple veneer is a little inconsistent with how the dingotone soaks in or takes the colour?

Well, some not so good results. The last coat of intensifying seems to have been affected (I am assuming) by the Sydney humidity. I left it all nice and smooth and shiny, now it looks like there are little bubbles and sand loosely scattered over the top with some orange peel affect in there.
Not sure what has happened. I rubbed back the last coat with 0000 DT steel wool so it was all even, blew off the wool dust with a compressor and wiped down 3 times with rags and microfibre pads. Frustrating.
Looks like I will have to wait for the last coat to cure properly and will have to cut it back and start again. Let's hope the veneer survives ...

That's a shame for the DT intensifying coat! It seems to be very sensitive to humidity!
