    So it's all working properly with no hum on your cardboard wiring template then?, if so, then maybe it might have something to do with the insides of the guitar, or maybe something that only causes the hum when the pickups, etc are installed in the guitar.


    I'm guessing that it could be that the bridge needs to be connected to a ground wire that connects to a suitable ground point on one of the pots, try re-installing the pickups and controls, etc in your guitar then see if you can get your husband to check with a multimeter to see if there's continuity between the bridge and the sleeve connection of the output jack, if there's no continuity then that's most likely what's causing the hum.

    How loud is the hum in comparison to the sound you get when tapping the pickups?, is it a fairly loud hum, or a soft background hum?


    I know from experience just how frustrating it can be to try and find the cause of a fault in electrical equipment, just keep persevering and eventually you'll have a win.
