Interested to see what you do with this one Pabs. What colour are you looking at once stripped and resanded.

Two possibilities. Do I go 'classic' and spray black with white pickguard
or stain dark cherry/wine red with black pickguard, sort of like this, but darker
Either way, I'm leaning towards a satin/matte finish.
Hmmm. I'm torn, but plenty to be done before that. Opinions welcome.

nice options Pabs, I'm leaning toward the dark cherry red with black pickguard, are you going to route a switch cavity front horn ?
If you're going to cut the pickguard that shape might as well.

My vote would be for the stain. Firstly you get to see some grain and secondly, it's got a lot more of a contemporary look and feel about, it's understated, but still mean. You paint one of these black with the white pickguard and instantly you've turned it into a metal guitar...used by "that guitarist" in "that band" yaaaawn.
Then again you might want that metal look.
I can see why your torn pabs, tough decision, I do like the original white on black, mainly because Mr Grohl had a guitar like that, and I like mr Grohl haha. But if it were me I would go with the red and black, purely because it's different and it hasn't been seen as much 😊 and do me a favour... Never say what you said before again! I'll fogive you this time 😉
I think if you stain it Pabs, go for a really dark one.
Satin black?

OK, Kurt gets it. Black is just the quintessential look for an explorer in my opinion, and let's not split hairs, Dave Grohl is the reason I like explorers in the first place (fanboy over here). But, that said, I really do like the idea of the dark cherry, so that's the forerunner at the moment. Plus, painting is a huge PITA.
@Wokka, oh definitely. Got to decide what to do with 3 pots though, two volumes seems a bit pointless.
Thanks for the input, fellas. Now, gold or chrome hardware?

yeah have to agree Pabs painting is a PITA when a clear coat rejected like mine Sunday !
So what does the Explorer normally have two volumes and a tone ?
Can't hurt Pabs, or you could put a kill switch in the middle pot hole maybe

Yeah, standard lay out is two volumes one tone. Might just stick to that, don't like kill switches too much.
