I have a on-line store that sells high quality ( not stainless steel sword like objects) katana's prices start around $700. If you buy a stainless steel sword DO NOT TRY TO CUT WITH IT! Stainless is too brittle for anything over a 15inch blade, it will snap and someone will lose an eye..........![]()
The proper traditional Katanas were made from a metal called Tamahagane, weren't they?, and the blade was differentialy hardened so that it had a hard outer shell which retained the edge and a softer inner core which absorbed shock and prevented the blade from shattering, the two different types of Tamahagane used were called Shingane and Kawagane, the differential hardening is why a Traditionally forged Katana can be used for cutting without breakages.
