Good tip that Sonic, will have to lock that one in the database.

Thanks for the advice guys. Pulled my head out and sanded back down to 600 then re stained the problem areas. A couple of them are almost invisible while the two major ones (on the front and on the edge of the belly cut) are much less noticeable. I can live with it. Then a mist coat and three more wet coats of clear.

And back in the cupboard for another three to four weeks to cure. I must say, I am so much happier with the finish straight out of the can this time around. Mostly from having a flatter surface to begin with, but conditions were more appropriate (wind and temperature wise) and will mean it will be a lot less work to sand out in the end.
Gosh, that looks good
Just before the rain hits us....nice 1 Pabs
Yowsa! Sweet job Pabs!
Thats one nice blue guitar
Lookin' good.
Nailed it!!
Wet sanding went far better this time around, and polishing has begun.

Doing it all by hand, so it might take another day or two of contemplating buying a power buffer and ice packing my right arm. Fun times.
$40 ozito does the trick.
Just get decent buffing pads.
Oh yeah? Like this one https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-11...isher_p6290089?
That's heaps cheaper than I expected.
Yep that's exactly what I have and I've used it hard for about 5 years now. Works fine.
Hell yeah! Thanks for the tip off!
Too easy, just make sure when you use it to keep it moving, don't let it sit too long one spot as, depending on what compounds you are using, it can 'burn' the surface. Also, let the buffer do the work. It should just rest on the surface and you guide it - you shouldn't need to push down on it, another good way to get burns or break throughs.
They really are awesome time and effort savers.
All over it my dude. I use a calico rag wheel on a bench grinder at work to polish acrylic, unfortunately way too aggressive to polish paint, but I'm familiar with the technique. :D
Cool cool :)
The one that comes with it is fine for cutting with. But for the final polishing stages a decent quality lambs wool one is the go. They are around $20 each at autobarn and I get a fair bit of use out of them before they are too clogged. There are some good synthetic options as well.
I usually put the whole thing in a shopping bag when I'm not using it to stop dust and crap accumulating.
i use theses there killer for guitar i use a 18v and a 14.4v cordless drill and cheap comes with the arbor which is good quality its my go to polisher for guitars the polisher you posted spins to slow to cut the paint back and you need faster to get that glass finish
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/19Pcs-3i...cAAOSwdW9aDXIK
i also use my Bosch gex 150mm random orbit with sponge pad but there pricey comes with 125mm soft pad and 150mm pad
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Bosch-GE...UAAOSwKXdabqP2
also have a Hitachi 9" polisher with lambs wool but the lambs wool leaves swirls which the sponge wont which is the best but way to fast for the small body
https://www.hitachipowertools.com.au.../sp18va-detail
also have one of theses but rarely use it as its just to slow to cut the paint in fact its crap waste of money

So the Rockwell @ 600W is slower than the 400W Bosch?
cheers, Mark.
Variable speed and easily swappable pads is definitely nice. There are certainly other options than the ozito if you really want to go all out. But for its price I'm happy with the bang for buck it offers and the results are good. I also have couple of drum and cone bits I use in a cordless drill for tricky spots like inside the horns.
Hey cheers Phroz, I've wondered about those foam buffing sets before, but forgot about them. Will order pronto. Probably stick with the microfibre pad to finish this one off now though.
Thanks, Phroz, I've just ordered a set for myself of the 19pc pads. What order do you use the pads in, and what are the wavy ones for? And do you use them with or without a cutting compound?
orange flats face Simon which are the stiffest, then orange knobby ones the rest i use just to polish i mainly use Meguiar's Polishing Compound have been using the Meguiar's Ultimate Compound atm but i think the polishing compound is better and is better with hand finishing, i use a $39 ozito 18v cordless with 2 18v 2 amp battery's works great fast enough to leave a super shine and slow enough not to burn the paint but any half decent cordless drill will work electric drill is way to fast and will burn the paint but the pads are the best i have tried and you all see the shine i get but pretty darn easy to do
you wont need to haft to worry about swirl marks as you just wont get any thats mainly done using lambs wool pad which i avoid on guitar body doesn't matter which paint you use as can use the same method

Thanks for the info, Phroz.
the drill is a Einhell brand in the UK simon
yes mate the Bosch kicks it butt hands down you can buy the Rockwell under heaps of different brands but there the same but there rubbish you can just go get a orange foam and stick it on the Bosch and it rips have been using Bosch gex for 30 years best sander on the market can go super slow to super fast the rockwell takes longer and no where near the finish i can get with a gex and its noisy as biggest piece of junk i ever brought but now i just use the pads on a cordless
I've got a Bosch 18v cordless drill. That's certainly a lot slower than a mains drill.
yep that will work good
Hi. Thanks for the tip. Only Bosch gear I have is a belt sander and decided that it's definitely too heavy duty for guitars let alone polishing.
I'll stay away from the Rockwell then and perhaps consider a battery powered drill. Could come in handy for other jobs as well.
cheers, Mark.

Still a few swirlies if you look hard enough, but I'm not too fussed. Ready for assembly.
Looks great man.
Very nice shade of blue Pabs. Some good grain showing too.

That looks so sweet.... gorgeous even !!
Reminds me of the sucked lolly look that old Valley Arts guitars had in the 80's
Cheers guys. Long weekend coming up, should have a few hours to myself to get this baby together! Exciting (it's only been 2 and a half years...)!
