No problem at all, I like the whole concept you're pursuing with this. I personally would be one to say have a bash at building your own neck. You learn a bucket load from the experience, and you can find tonnes of advice here in the forums. I am currently using my semi failed scratch build neck as a test bed for radiusing fret boards and fretting/inlay work, so it's not like a fail is a total loss. There is always more that you can take out if these attempts.
Unless your angle grinder is mounted on a stand, with an attached work table, I'd have thought keeping the blade at 90° to the wood would be rather difficult. Also, with a 90mm thick piece of wood, you'd need to have a very large angle grinder in order to get the depth of cut you'd need. A 230mm/9" grinder - the largest hand held size I can find available - has a maximum depth of cut of 65-70mm (or so the web says) in one go.
I'd be thinking of different tools for the job. I've got an electric plane and belt sander, neither are hard to use (though you need to be careful to not get too enthusiastic with them!) and I'd be tempted to do most of the work with the plane and then swap to the belt sander.
Sorry Simon, I guess I didn't explain myself properly.
I'm talking about using an angle grinder fitted with a sanding disc, similar to this item
https://www.bunnings.com.au/josco-10...-disc_p6320309
Many people use these to shape the back their strat bodies with a belly curve etc.
Mainly my fault, mate. I've only just woken up, so my brain's skipping some of the words ATM. Probably harder to get a good flat surface with one of those sanding disks (an electric plane would be preferable for that), but it could be useful for rough shaping the back of the neck. I'd find a neck shape you like, and use one of those contour gauges to duplicate the profile at different points along the neck and copy those to some cardboard templates so you can easily see how close you are to the right shape.

I'm looking at using a PBG LP style neck at this point. I might tackle doing a full scratch build at a later date.
I'm at a financial crisis point at this stage.
My wife and I allow ourselves $100 a month for "pocket money" for want of a better word. January's is already gone thanks to a Melbourne trip at the end of last year, and I've already dug into February's with some bits for this build. I also have a birthday in March which is $200 extra. Having said that, my Playstation 4 has just died, and it is no longer covered by warranty, even though this is the 3rd unit I have got thanks to earlier failures. To go through Sony to replace it with a "Re-manufactured Unit" will cost me $230. I may be going on 42, but I still game just not as much as before, but also use the PS4 for Netflix and video streaming online.
I'm thinking of just getting a Chromecast, and be done with the PS4. That will leave me with more to finish this build.
Urgggh, I hate trying to set priorities!!
Thankfully my loving Wifey has helped me out! I'll be trading in my PS4 for a pre-owned unit through EB Games. Still covered by a 12mth warranty if anything does happen to go wrong.
And on top of that, I still have my Birthday money coming!!
I have a number of items already ordered through Ebay, they include the Pickup that Robin used, an acoustic bridge set up, string through ferrules, some black acoustic bridges, plus another top secret item.
Still need to buy some timber for the body, a neck through PBG, some tuning machines and a plate for the neck.
I'm now looking at ideas for replacing the dots on the fretboard. What has everyone experimented with? One idea I had was glitter glued into the hole, then scraping it level. It would be a different effect.
Any other ideas? BTW, what size are the standard holes on the PBG necks? My LP did not have dots.
Standard PBG kit dots are 6mm, I assume it's the same on the stand-alone necks. Glitter for dots... that's it, no more help from me.
You just have no imagination!!:p
Trust me, if it sucks, it won't be going on the guitar!!
My thought process was having a visible depth to the dots that isn't seen in pearloid or shell. They are both a flat surface. Sure they have shimmer, especially the shell, but can you see into them??!!
Glitter in the base of th hole acrylic resin or clear epoxy to fill in.
Super glue the bottom of the hole before the glitter goes on to fix it in place.
See Weirdy!! It's a workable option!!
Frankie, is this something you have done yourself? I had a quick look at Spotlight the other night, and they have different grades of glitter like fine or coarse. What did you use?
Could you just use superglue as a filler?
Oh I know it can be done... it was more a question of taste ;) Then again, if it's stripper glitter that you collected personally, well then I can definitely see merit in the idea.
The stock plastic dots are quite deep, so you probably would have to use clear epoxy for the fill.
It's not something I've done Z, I just remember the concept from somewhere. It's like coating plain glass for a mirror, the shiny bit goes on the bottom and the clear bit goes over the top!
Not sure about just filling with super glue, you'd need to experiment, probably outdoors as it would whiff like hell, ditto with the epoxy or casting resins options.
Thanks to Kick's inquiry about different coloured binding, I have a couple of quick questions for the guru's...
How easy is it to change the binding on a neck?
Will I need to remove the frets, or can I get away with leaving them in place?
What's the best glue for applying binding to timber?
As always, Thanks in advance!!
Hi Zandit, just catching up on a few threads and saw this one.
Another thought for the fret markers is nail polish as that is what I used on the Swampcaster and only cost $4.95. I also looked into glow in the dark stuff and you can order the powder in different colours on eBay. Also saw on another thread tonight that you can order pre-made glow in the dark fret markers and side dots from Stew Mac in the states and here is the link.... http://www.stewmac.com/Materials_and...Dark_Dots.html
All up it would cost AUD $20.50 plus freight.
Thanks Bud, most appreciated. I have the side markers sorted, but I'm still toying with what I'm going to do with the front markers. I still want to do something different from the norm. I have a cheapie dremel style engraver. Hopefully it will fit in the Dremel routing kit available from the green shed. That will give me some more flexibility in putting my ideas to work!
Wow, S*** just started getting real!!
Birthday money is in my hot lil hands!! Time to start purchasing some more bits and pieces.
So, just a refresher, here is what I have already.
1 Only - Acoustic Piezo/mic blend pick up
1 Only - Acoustic Guitar Bridge "kit" that will only have certain parts used
12 Only - Black String Thru Ferrules
5 Only - Black Plastic Bridges - These were only $1.00 delivered, and come in a set of 5 anyway!
1 Only - Top secret idea that will more than likely be a failure, and won't be used!
Next on the agenda:
1 Only - LP Style Bolt-on Neck from PBG
1 Only - Black Neck Mounting Plate, or Black Set of Neck Ferrules and Screws from PBG or Ebay
1 Only - 3-a-side black tuning machines from PBG
1 Only - Timber Slab from the BGS
1 Only - Set of Acoustic Steel Strings
2 Only - 2mm thick Timber laminates for headstock
Plans are moving forward!!
good stuff Zandit glad the wheels are turning on the project.
Happy birthday whenever it was !
How about colour changing LED position markers... ;)
Grrr. Possible snag has been hit.
I've been in contact with Adam to see if just on the off chance he had a neck without tuning machine holes already drilled.
I knew it was a long shot, but if I went down that path, it would be a custom order job and wouldn't be here until July.
Having said that, I could get the binding done in black and no fret markers either, so I would basically have a blank canvas, which would be ideal.
Unfortunately he doesn't have any basic black tuners in stock, but does have some alternatives coming in sometime this month.
Some thinking to do!
Zandy have a look on ebay for a neck maybe. Otherwise compare the price of a PBG custom one and a DB built neck to your specs
New idea for position markers. I saw an ad for swarovski crystal stick ons for clothing.....
Hmmm, there's an idea, but do you think DB would do an LP Style neck for only $55??!! That would be only an hours worth of labour with some tradies.
I did have a look on Ebay for necks a while ago, but like the PBG ones, they were already drilled. I could plug them and start again, but what I have in mind it would be easier with a solid head stock.
Yeah, I would love to do that, but I'm a bit skeptical about my skills going the full scratch build at this stage. I want to prove the theory first, but thanks for the confidence boost!
Awesome! Thanks for that, hopefully that will be workable with mine as well.
Haha, sorry bud, Priscilla's Queenie bus didn't stop off here on the NW coast!!!
Hmmm, 8 pages in, and nothing has started! At least I can say it's not a rushed build!!
all good Zandy it takes time to plan a scratchy and one as bizaar as this one. A custom neck from DB would be over $200/250 !
I think a pre-drilled neck is the go, plug the holes and re-drill. Then you can cover the plugs with a nice veneer !
Otherwise July is way too far away ! Without the neck it will put the build to a fast halt
Mate if I can do something vaguely neck shaped c/w truss rod, using only hand saws, Hand Planes and a 400w router I'm pretty sure you can too. If you need inspiration check out Robin's latest thread. He uses exclusively hand tools and its all very well documented.
Yeah, I thought that would be the case with DB. Having said that, I'm sure it would be a beautiful neck to use!
I could plug the holes, and the veneer doesn't need to be flash, as it would be painted, but I need some added thickness in the head stock for what I have planned(Shhh!! Secret stuff!!!)
the headstock would need to be longer for a 12 string Frankie, not thicker. My guess is Zandy will be using the 3 a side tuners with side holes (not top/bottom) like on my baritone lap steel
Not necessarily, Woks...

Hmmm, good guesses, and Wokka is the closest, but not quite!!
Just came across this on Ebay...
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Elect...4AAOSwyjBW7QvH
Ideally it would have black binding, but otherwise this would be perfect.
