Back with a Bass! Has been a long time since teh first build...and a lot of things happened...But the idea of another kit slowly grew...
For I liked the shape of the IB-4, but with the look of the P-Bass pickups, so tried some customized order this time.
Overall The kit is in a good condition. On the back some mistakes of cutting and damages on the surface
but should be no problem to deal with that. I am not surte about the placing of the poti drills...somehow not really good...but lets see...
The covering of the back electronics might be tricky, for the shape is curved. And I am not sure about the nut, looks very deep on the low strings, but maybe its fine for bass...lets see. So, another little journey of sanding
Overall idea of the kit is to keep the wood color, getting a smooth surface with wood oil or wax. Want to keep it mat.
Also using black hardware, DiMarzio P-Bass Pickups and making a string through body version.
I can't see a hole for an output jack on the body in the photos, though it may just be hidden away and you haven't caught it in the pictures.
The nut will need some work on those slots after it's strung up. The low E slot looks about right to me (though you may find it can be lowered once it's all built), and the other slots are almost certainly higher than they should be.
I agree the holes for the potentiometers aren't the best choice. The trouble with custom Pit Bull kits is that unless you specify details of everything that needs to change when you swap from two pickups to one, you get what you are given (and you are lucky not to still have four potentiometer holes - I've seen that before). They've simply drilled two of the hole positions that were there on the standard kit using their standard template.
The sides of the control cavity are a bit rough I agree, but the standard control cover for the kit sits proud of the body, so you won't see the marks once it's fitted.
Good luck with the sanding and I hope the rest of the build goes smoothly.
Just be aware that it's not always easy to get a good string ground with black hardware, though it depends on whether it's painted or tinted/stained metal. With a painted bridge, you may need to scrape some of the paint away to get a good electrical contact.
Hi Simon. Happy to see your new projects...I haven't been here for a while...
And about the custom order...actually I made a photoshop mockup of how it should look like...because I expected something like this to come...Even if I told not to make any holes, there still would be some I suppose
First they made a J-Bass instead of P-Bass So I am happy after months of waiting to have the right Bass Kit
I suppose the communication with the factories is a bit difficult...don't know...
But I am still very grateful to have the opporunity getting a custom kit. So will have to deal with that, for another custom order is already done months ago
The outputjack is on the bottom, centered between the two potis...I would placed all of that different...but...
And if it was not about keeping the wood color I could easily close the wrong poti and make another hole and put the paint over it...
Now I have to think about what could work and how I can transform it...or maybe keep like this.
Thought (not very serious) about closing the upper poti next to the bridge and paint the grain but even if I could do this perfect, it will be visible...
Made some sanding on the body. Correction of the control cavity. Making the shape smooth and fine. Giving here and there some details.
The output jack was drilled in a wrong angle and position, a bit ruined in my opinion. Hard to deal with, because of the very round bodyedge. Made it a bit wider, so should work now...
The bridge, that should be used for strings through body, looks quiet big and heavy...but have not seen more filigree or fine ones...
Thank you Simon!
I like your bass project very much! Looks great and the blue is awesome!
I think I have to look at the complete bass to realise the size of the bridge. I don't really like the bridge of the kit, maybe in chrome it looks better. And my bridge seems a bit bulging. Let's see
The output jack is fine in place, but I have to build something on the inside, to be able to pull it tight later, atm it is dancing around in the hole 🙂 have some ideas, let's see...
I would suggest an angled block of wood for the output jack. Then you should be able to get a nut and washer to sit flat against the block to hold the jack in place.
