First post... I have just placed an order for the same model but RH. Im nervous about it all but also excited. I have plans for the paintjob as an homage to my old custom vw that was finished in a cocoa pearlestent paint so im thinking a silver metal flake top with a rootbeer (brown) candy over the top. The the back and sides in an amber stain... (allthough this could all change) I'm trying to source some mega-trons or gold filtertrons at the moment and have already ordered a rollerbridge... Should be with me sitting on my desk when i get back after christmas so i guess I need to start my own build thread.. thanks for the inspiration! i'm sure ill be asking LOTS of questions!

    WIRING HUM! Need Help please.
Very frustrated today as after the 3rd wiring attempt I still have the Hum! No idea why. Each attempt I have changed wires, added shielded wire, and on last attempt changed pots and switch. No change. Except my soldering improved.

    Here's what's happening:
Turning the Master Tone pot to zero removes hum, even with Master Vol on high. is this a clue?
Hum reduces when I touch components.
Hum increases when I touch the cloth covered hot wires

I have vintage shielded wire from Master Tone to Master Vol. And from Master Tone to Jack.
    Other wires are cloth covered.
    Hopefully someone can suggest something.

    Hi BuffaloGhost,
I'm looking forward to seeing yours evolve.
I'm having problems with electronics at the moment.

Oh no paolo! Anything serious? Or just annoying? I’ve got this all to look forward to.

I do have some very good electrical wiring technicians I can call on. But I kinda want to do it all myself.

    Yep.
Can't get rid of the loud Hum. I don't even get a tap sound when I tap the pickups. Have checked, and redone joins without any luck.
having searched online and the forum, I think I'm going to order some braided shielded wire and do it all again. But am thinking surely they wouldn't supply un-sheilded wires if it didn't work?

That does sound strange. And it’s all earthed correctly to the bridge? That’s the only thing I could think of that would cause a huge hum.

I’m sure someone will have better feedback than me though. Hang in there dude.

Hey paolo i had a similar problem and it was a grounding issue, but finding it is the difficult bit. Good luck

Hi Paolo, Have you got an earth wire grounded to the bridge?

Grab an wire with two alligator clips and try grounding the the bridge, quick way to see if that's an issue.

if its a hum that disappears when you touch the wires it sounds like an earth - when you touch that wire YOU effectively earth the wire.. hope you manage to sort it.

This is a common misconception and you don't earth/ground the wire, touching the ground wire grounds you.

When you connect direct to a good ground, either a) your body stops acting like an aerial picking up RFI and making any moise worse, or b) your body acts like a big ground plane and soaks up a lot of the RFI around, significantly reducing the level of hum (I'm not sure which, or it may be a combination of both).

If you acted as a ground, then touching the signal wire would kill all noise- but instead it makes it louder. In this instance RFI being picked up by your body is being fed into the guitar signal, making the hum worse.
