Hi Guys,

Stupid question time (I think!).

When mounting the neck pup the Video Guide shows it being mounted on the body by Adam....my question is this.....Although the two holes in the pick guard are there to allow adjustment of pup height relative to the strings could you not reverse mount it on the pick guard which covers the two holes with screws ? I feel it looks more aesthetically pleasing?

Any way, i have attached a couple of the photos of what i mean.

I hear you re tuner holes, the reason they come pre drilled is to make life a bit easier for folk that may be apprehensive about drilling them...
Having said that, the work around would be to plug them and re drill... If you were to do this I would recommend the Veritas brand of plug cutters.
These guys cut a slightly tapered plug. This means you can get a really nice fit and if you can match the grain, almost invisible.
Only thing you need to be careful of is not to drive the plug in too hard as they can split the headstock......

Sure, you can mount it on the pickguard, if that is what you want. It will almost certainly make life easier for you.

as for the bone choice , cattle is dense and prevalent, i'm sure you can get buffalo or whatever, but cow should be fine, DB will know more

Haha... I hadn't watched that video yet, just did a mock build of my TL-1 - I thought we were supposed to attach them to the pickguard
Seems like an easy way to do it - instead of trying to position the pup under the pickguard, then remove the pickguard without moving the pup, then drill it without moving it.
I guess it would definitely be more secure if you screw it into the body instead of the pickguard. Never having played an electric guitar yet, I'm not sure if that would be a factor or not.

Now here's a thought.....a pickup works by picking up vibrations of a spring that disturb the magnetic Flux around the poles.....so mounting the neck pup on either the pick guard or body should not matter....however as we all know pickups will also detect a bump or knock etc.....so based on that they should also detect resonance through the body......but.....sound waves travel longitudinally through materials of the same density at a constant velocity but wherever there is a velocity change the waveform should change to a transverse waveform and refract off leading to refracted back wall echoes of the signal and therefore Muddiness of the sound due to the multiple wave peaks as harmonics of the forcing frequency...

So anyone else got any thoughts on body or pick guard mounting the neck pup

A pickup transduces the mechanical energy of a vibrating string into an electrical signal. The intensity of the signal depends on numerous factors:

1. The momentum of the vibrating string is the product of its frequency, amplitude and mass, and depends on the force a player applies to the string ( the attack ) and the amount of energy absorbed by the guitar which explains that the output of a pickup varies in different guitars.

2. The efficiency of a pickup is the result of many factors.

The number of turns per square.
The relation between the length and the cross section of its coil or coils.
The diameter of the coil wire.
The permeability of the core.
The hysteresis of the core.
The permeance coefficient of the magnetic circuit ( B/H).
The energy product of the magnetic circuit ( Bd Hd.)

Remember, a pickup is NOT a power generator, and the magnitudes of volts, amps and watts are extremely small; but, regardless how many turns you put on a pickup, you will NEVER get 100 watts out of a 50 watt amp.

So body or pick guard mounted.....find it hard to understand theoretically how you can get a cleaner signal with body mounting the pickup....such a huge velocity change between wood and carbon steel.....might just try both options and listen for a difference !!!!

And wouldn't it be nice if you could get more than 100% efficiency from a pick up.....

However, seeing that Einstein is starting to be proven wrong with some of his theories ( speed of light being a constant and it not being possible to travel faster which has now been proven incorrect after the detection of neutrinos travelling faster)...maybe just maybe it is possible......

What do we want? .....time travel !!!.......when do we want it ? It's irrelevant !!!
