One quirk has been the "bleeding" from the black edge binding into the grain of the quilted maple (see photos below). Adam has kindly offered to replace the kit with a non-quilted version, but I thought I would ask if anyone else has seen this and worked out how to fix it or work around it?

I do like the quilted maple grain and would like to keep it if possible.

That's the exact same problem I have with my just-arrived PRS-1Q. The bleeding won't show on my built because I'll be putting a pretty wide black burst on it

What is the quality of the finish like on your quilted maple veneer? Mine looks like it was prepared using 80 grit. There are a few quite deep sanding scratches in some places.

I've been warned on this forum about the Q kits having really thin veneer, so I'm already nervous about sanding the imperfections out before attempting a rubbed burst, which will require MORE sanding.

Neck pickup route on these Tele kits is a bit too large to get away with no pick guard if using traditional single coil PUP in the Neck position. Bummer about the binding bleed. Dark edge burst is probably the only way you could save the rest.

Muzza, the maple is pretty good. I would say finished with 120 or so on mine. I am going to go very carefully with the sanding though :-)
There is one small dent, pin head size, that i will try and steam out first though.

Wazkelly I found a conversion plate on Guitarfetish that covers the routed hole for a humbucker nicely. However, I have decided to stick with the pick guard due to the pre-drilled holes.

OK, After several emails with Adam (thank you for be patient with me), I am keeping the kit and will do a small burst to hide the bleeding - thanks for the advice DB - so have ordered the dingo tone black stump which I will use on the sides, neck and for the burst. That just leaves me with a spare clear coat kit for the next guitar

Next step also done - mock build. On to the sanding, sanding, sanding, ... zzzzzz

Marze go super light on the sanding of the veneer. I'd start at least 320 grit and don't sand much

rest of the body go for your life !

Just found your build diary, I was wondering when you were going to start! :-)

For the burst, I've used the DT black stump on the bass to spike up the walnut a bit and it IS very black!
Try to practice the burst on some wood offcut before you stain the body.
It's not hard but better do a practice run!

That's GREAT to hear. I must've got a bad batch. Looking forward to guinea-pigging the Black Stump mkII.
