    Simple workaround is to file the tip down, leave just enough to stop the bit wandering off. You only really need .5mm tip length.
    Another good one is to use Forstner type bits, but getting them smaller than 5mm can be a challenge.

    There is always a workaround for glitches, mistakes and other Guitar building gremlins.....

    Yeah good idea, as long as you've got a decent guide hole or deep centre point the tip on the brad point is irrelevant, I might grind one down tomorrow and try it out.
    Forstner bits was my first thought but as you say, small ones, I ain't got none:-(
