If the timber is still damp, grab an old tea towel and sneak the household iron out (just don't get caught, wives and mothers have a thing about us guys using the iron for non clothing type jobs)
Set it on a cool setting and lay the tea towel over the areas affected and gently force dry it, the grain should shrink back to somewhere close to its correct place.
You will still have to sand it all back though........
