Nice concept Kurt, I'll be watching the thread with interest.
I'd definitely be masking up the lines and spraying too, tape would be a nightmare and look pretty tacky imho.
Lines before or after stain is another question altogether:P
That pic Pabs' posted is a fine example alright!
Cheers Pablo I Pm'd you.
@wokka, yeah that's the video that I fell in love with to the mockingbird with xD Slash is my personal favourite guitarist. I was thinking of doing the stripes in the solid paint, I just wasn't sure about how the red was going to go over the top of that if it would smudge or blend or something, I'm probably just being over paranoid about it haha. I'm not sure what you mean about the spring cavity? Is there a certain distance the sprigs should stretch or a certain amount of tension, I've persoanlly even touched a guitar with a floyd trem on it so I've never had a close look at how it's set up or anything. I mainly decided on it because I do like the look of it and I wanted a nicer guitar with a tremolo on it instead of my old dodgy fender. I have ordered on and on the way so when it gets here I should be able to work out its design from there.
Based on the slash model mockingbird, does anyone know of a nice guitar stain that's a really deep coloured red like that? I've heard dingotone is really good but is it that sort of red?
Cheers

Hey Kurt,
this is karajini red on a spalted cap after about 6 coats, its a pretty deep red.
I'd do some more research on staining over the black strip, might even have to put a clear coat or 2 over it before you remove the masking tape to stop the stain smudging it, I'm not sure. Someone might find the build thread of the LP pic that Pablo posted. It was a while ago.
The spring cavity would be about same size as the back of your strat. Should be enough meat in the body to not go through to the pup cavities.
Once you get the floyd templates it will be much clearer

@bargeloobs, I agree, tape would be easier but I think after a bit of wear from gigs and stuff it would start to not look so good so I was going to paint the stripes in but then I have to take into consideration what the staining does to it, I'm gunna have to do some research on that,
I took some photos and found some photos that I think I want it to look like but my phone won't let me upload them so I'll do it from my computer in a few hours.

Ooooo! Another Mockingbird build! Don't see many of these babies, so I'll be watching this thread closely. :-)

Yer man haha I'm doing it because not many people do them and I like to be a little different? Sorry if I'm mistaken but was it you that did one? Yellow and black with the wasp decal on it?
For some things, some times, it's the same time all over the world, and I think we know what time that is...
Aye, indeed it was. You're a man after my own heart, Kurt. I like to go against the norm as well, and what better way to do it than with a Mockingbird guitar painted with yellow stripes? ;-)
Pretty keen to see your beastie develop though. I always like seeing builds that are a bit different, and your plan does indeed sound exciting. :-)

Hey don't get all sappy on me nowbut yes I dod go through all 17 pages (I think) of your build diary, must say that decal and paint had me drooling pal. I loved it. And it does sound exciting but I'm trying so hard not to rush this. I did a twin neck not too long ago and it looked nice but played like .... and had paint job problems because I rushed it and just wanted to play it. So this one will take some time

Haha! Who's getting sappy now?! :-P
Cheers though, man. Appreciate it. I really should get around to finishing that diary actually. Had the guitar basically done for a while now.
As for your build, slow and steady will win the race. Prefinish prep is what will make or break your build, so make sure you spend plenty of time sanding and doing other body prep in order to get the best finish possible.
Lastly, please upload those pictures, cause I want to see this wood grain! ;-)
