If you use a battery box, I think they generally come with a lip so they can mount without being recessed. That's how mine was, in any case.

I like the green and the yellow. Red is cool, but I had to do a lot of experiments before I got it to look good. I am no expert, however.
Thank you. There are couple of varieties available. Ones that can be mounted flat in back and other ones from sides. I have ordered a couple. The kit has just gone to the customs. Hope fully should be in my hand by next week to take a call.

I am getting a few other dyes to experiment. Will have to zero in on them soon

My guitar is still stuck at the customs. It's been there for more than a week now. Nits been a frustrating wait for me. I have had parcels cleared in a day or two. But this one is stuck. I am. Not sure when this will get cleared

Finally got the parcel today, After much deliberation from the customs. They levied a custom duty equivalent to 60USD in Indian rupees. I had to go to the post office and bring it back. Looks like they had opened it for inspection and then repacked it a bit

After coming home I had a little time to check if all the components are there. Looks like all are there except for the Fret crowning file that i had ordered and which Mr. Adam said he had shipped it. I have checked the box thoroughly and it is not there. I have Mailed Mr. Adam Boyle regarding that and I am yet to get a reply.

The kit looks nicely done. No bubbles on the veneer. Lovely grains on it

Lucky that it came in one piece as I know how bad these people handle Parcels

I haven't done a mock test yet. But on preliminary neck fitting to check neck pocket, the neck pocket seems to be too small for the neck as a result I am able to fit the neck only in such a way that the last 2 frets juts into the top humbucker cavity. I am not able to pull up the neck at all fully into neck.pocket

May i know What I should do to properly fit the neck in place? Should I sand the neck or the pocket?

Also had a blue light test on the veneer and there seems to be a lot of glue spots on the veneer

Looks like there is a bit of a sanding job to do. May i know What grit should I use for this?

Thanks in advance and wish me luck...

Hi Drushkum. Probably do not do anything for a few days and let the neck and body settle. Then a combination of sanding the neck and pocket should fix it!

For the glue marks: A gentle wire brush can be used. Then, if you are staining the top, most forum members say not to go above 180 g , though I usually go to 240 g. "Strip sanding" the glue marks could work.

I use a metal dish scourer ( the scrunched wool style) and if not heavy handed can get most off easily.
I would only light sand as the veneer tops aren’t that thick and the two ES models I have done seem to be thin around the toggle holes on the lower horn.

I tried to do a check mock fit today morning. I was able to wiggle out the neck into the neck pocket but it's too tight. I had to do it very gently and very slow. It could go from where it was to 1mm above the neck cavity route. I don't thing it can go any further up.

I have enclosed a few pictures from the sides too. And picture of the neck and pocket. The neck seems to be a couple of millimeter broader than neck pocket. Should i sand it down a bit. Should i do it on both sides equally.

Also after fitting the neck into the pocket from the sides, the top of fretboard seems to be a bit higher. Is the neck not only broader but thicker too? I have a pic below from the sides showing neck and how high it is from the body..

Is this a mismatch? Should I email Adam and ask him to check the pic too?

I haven't put the strings and measured the scale yet as, I feel If i had to pull up the neck the sides of neck pocket would break..

I thought ill do that after you guys take a look at it

    Here are the pictures

This is a video of the fit too

    Hi Drashkum,

" The neck seems to be a couple of millimeter broader than neck pocket."

This is normal. The heel of the neck is tapered and will not slip into the neck pocket by sliding it towards the pickup cavities. It needs to be pushed into position from above the body pushing towards the back of the body.

Looking at your pictures, it does look like the high e string side of the neck heel is not flat (it looks like the routing was not finished!) and will need to be sanded!

"Also after fitting the neck into the pocket from the sides, the top of fretboard seems to be a bit higher."

This does look a bit high. Was the neck pushed all the way into the pocket, so that the back of the heel is flush with the base of the pocket? You may find it sits better after sanding the sides!

Yes the neck was all the way down till it touches the bottom of the neck Pocket. The neck heel has a slight angle too in such a way that a shim may not be needed. Though it was very tight I tried to push it as much as it can go down and touch the neck pocket. You can see that from the video I had posted yesterday.

    Now what can be done?

Yours looks as it should. The 'bump' on the high e side of the neck heel can be flattened with a medium to smooth file if needed.
As you are planning on staining, remember to not put stain or top coat finish on the neck heel or pocket where they are glued together.

I have built a couple of basses that are similar (ESB-4 types), and yours looks pretty close. The real test is when you string it, so you may want to make that part of your dry-fit. You want to make sure that everything lines up. The strings should go over the screws on the pickups. The strings should be the proper height over the pickups. the string length should be right to the bridge. If all that checks out then life is good ;-)

I had sort of promised myself no more guitars with binding or veneer...but yours looks very cool and has had the unfortunate consequence of activating my GAS ;-) Glad it came through customs OK. I am sure that Adam will get back to you about the file. Fortunately, you don't use it until you are most of the way through the build so it has a little time to get there.
