I can see that the ash figuring is uneven between the pieces of wood used. It's not all straight and there's only one piece with highly figured ash. Probably why it was rejected. The positioning of the most highly figured section visually clashes a bit with the angled control plate and draws your eyes towards it. I'd go with the charcoal stain myself.
