To be honest, I didn't. But that is because there were some other glue spots visible even without wetting the surface and those spots drew my attention and I worked on them with water and a toothbrush to make them disappear. So when they were gone I never would expect that there were lots more glue spots...Originally Posted by Simon Barden

That said, I have the feeling that the stain is doing its work on the glue spots. After the last picture I added some more stain and it looks as if the glue spots are becoming less visible. More pictures tomorrow!
