Yup, and I started sanding with 240 grit (lightly) which takes off a lot of the excess timbermate, then when i hit the cap, I only sanded it with 320 and 400 grits so it doesn't take a lot off and you can "control" the sanding a bit more.
The corollary is the cap wont be as smooth as you would like it and the spalted caps are a bit ripply anyway. I just had to build up heaps of coast of Tru oil to get the cap flat...
