    Ash has a strong grain and sanding will leave a largely flat, but not completely flat surface for the spray. Filler will make the surface flatter so that the spray doesn't show the grain. Timbermate is good for staining, but if you are spraying, there will be other alternatives.

    Another word for filler is putty - maybe that is a better word for translation?
