So I've just decided to do a Les Paul kit up for my Girlfriend for our 2 year anniversary as she's always wanted to learn and play guitar. It's just been ordered and should hopefully be on it's way soon enough. The guitar will have black hardware as well as a nice deep green stain across the maple top! Followed by a black sunburst type effect around the edge. With that in mind, is it possible to paint the binding around the cap or does it not work so well?

sounds like a nice plan for the new build. Will it be painted or stained ? Do you mean the thin part of the binding that is visible from the top ? I'd be worried about paint or stain eventually wearing off in places so the white will be visible

I plan to stain I deep green, with a black, sunburst type defect around the edge of it. I wanted to completely change the colour of the binding to black to blend with the burst and black hardware. Not sure if this is doable though, will decide for sure when she arrives

I stained the binding on my IB build, and haven't had a problem yet. As long as you seal it in with clears it should be fine, as it does rub off in its raw, natural form.

So i recieved my kit today and i am in love with the flame maple top on it, a few glu spot, nothing out of the norm. i did happen to notice that the maple top on it was thin around the edges and worn all the way through in some spots, very minute and im not too worried about it to be honest.
Naturally the first thing i did was make a mock build to check everything was there.
While pulling it apart again i did notice this
does anyone know if the neck is suppose to be cut out on the side like this, if so why? does it do anything specific?

yes the neck heel is supposed to be offset like that, the overhanging fingerboard rests on the body.
I assume the reason for this is a narrower part of the body cutout for the neck pocket should have more strength in the join when its glued

Hey Kurt, the overhang is normal and correct.
The semi circular cut out is on all of the neck tangs, I have questioned their meaning myself, and no real answers.
I imagine it is simply a part of the manufacturing process.

Its a Grubson thing... No reason other than compensating for the lower cut away..
There is always a workaround for glitches, mistakes and other Guitar building gremlins.....
Siiick, just making sure it wasn't a fault with the kit is all, thanks for clearing thatnext question is, where on earth would I start with this and how, I'm good at painting a solid colour and priming I and everything but I would imagine that gets thrown out the window now that I'm staining?
I'm still waiting my my dingotone stain to come so what can I do to prepare it so it's ready to put straight on when it arrives?
