Dedmans PBG-2

my custom kits are still a few months away and I hate to waste this good building weather so.....

Plans are as per the picture. Gold Foil pick ups, humbucker at the bridge single at the neck. Teisco tail peice, roller bridge because it was cheap to buy two and mash them to get the black and gold. Tuners are mini Grovers but with gold kit nuts and screws.Humbucker will be split on the volume knob. Waiting for some more black and gold Marshal amp knobs to arrive. I need to design a pick guard or mounting ring for the neck pick up and decide on a headstock shape. Colour will be blue aniline wood dye on the front and head stock with a black burst, all black on the back, probably a walnut stained neck.

This is going to be worth watching :)

You can also take the top bit (that you turn) off the tuners and swap the gold kit bits on there if you want. The spline/tang things all line up and it works fine.

Sure this will be another classic :)

I did try that Sonic, but it was too much gold, I just want slight traces. I have gold strings for it as well. I do like the Brian May gold 9's from Optima, have them on a few guitars now.

Btw, here's an idea for someone crazier than me. Grab one of these kits, copy the bottom horn to the top, air brush the top as an Alien head with the headstock being the second mouth that shoots out. Yea I know......and I'm not even on drugs.

Looks and sounds like it's gunna be a yummy build... Looking forward to watching its progress...

Might need a sketch to see what you mean? Sure you don't want to do it that way afterall? Would look awesome.

Nice idea! Love this kit, I have one on the shelf waiting for me and I have a different idea for it...

Regarding pickguard,

I recently did a photoshop mock-up for a customised shape tele pick guard.

This allows me to customise a pickguard which takes into various standard tele designs.

If you want me to do some mock ups when you design your headstock and pick guard let me know.

thanks mate, got my pencil out yesterday and drew up the pick guard...things what holds the pick-ups ( because they don't do much guarding !) The head stock will take its cue from the pick up thingy's . :confused:

nope, its aniline wood dye

Not Black but still an interesting colour.

well, there was a problem....on applying a clear coat (acrylic) the dye went a khaki green. So off to the paint store... new top colour scheme comin up . I think this is a result of the timbers underlying hues, as I tried dissolving some of the dye powder in the actual clear coat and it looked fine, sprayed fine on pine but went hideous green on the mahogany. Metallic pearl navy blue top coming up.

Geez, missed an opportunity for a camo themed finish!

LOL Waz. well. This is kinda cammo... is it blue or is it purple? We could go viral with this!

There is a bit of red pearl in the colour so depending on the light it can look purple or blue. There is a thin fade/burst on the edges but I mixed some of the colour in with the first clear coat, the result is an extremely subtle fade. That is the first clear coat in the pics. Subsequent coats will fill the last of the visible grain.

she spoke for the first time today . Still more polishing, some little details and intonation/ better strings. But it passed all tests.

The back was an experiment to see if I could blend in an image that was printed on clear vinyl. It kinda works but takes umpteen coats of clear to get level

The image came out really well and pretty clear... though for me I'd prefer to see more contrast against the background...

An experiment because you have an idea percolating in your brain for a future build?

I've thought about doing a top that way Fretty, I could do my art work to accommodate the hardware and possibly seem to interact. I have thousands of ideas , most of them bad, the sorting process is endless LOL. BTW, the guitar plays great, I love the size and shape. I think my Jnr may have contender for fav.

It IS possible to get the ball to slip into place with the tail piece on but its worse than stringing a Bigsby, I found it quickest to put all 6 strings in place with it off, put a bit of tape over the balls and then install it.
