Just got the box and it all seems to be there. Pretty excited to attempt this. I know virtually nothing about woodwork, electricity, soldering or building guitars. I just like playin 'em and lookin' at 'em.

Then you've come to the right place, I think most guys here know that feelin. But there's a heap of answers to be had, you just gotta ask the questions and someone here will have the answer....except if the question is about understanding woman, no one has those answers.
welcome to the forum Mongrel, nice looking kit you scored, looks like a LP-1M mahogany body and neck. What colour Dingotone kit did you order ?
Looks like some nice flame maple on the veneer. Best early tip I can give you is don't sand the veneer much they are very thin. If you want to pop the flames with a black stain then I'd advise no pre-sanding before you apply the black stain then sand it back with 320 grit paper.
Ask any questions you have and good luck with the build. Most important stage of the build is setting (gluing) the neck so ask lots of questions.
OOOOOh another LP build! I will eventually get around to doing one, though I should probably start finishing the others first...
Welcome to the madhouse, you've gotten a great kit by the looks of your pic. Have you any outrageous plans? Look forward to seeing it evolve :)
Hi Mongrel, that's a sweet looking kit, I'm sure you're going to have fun with it.
I'm in the same situation as you with woodworking skills, and over the last month and a bit I've been managing OK by taking everything slowly, asking all the questions I can think of when I'm unsure about something, and measuring/checking things 2 or 6 times before doing anything like cutting or filing that can't be undone.
It's fun as :)
Welcome Mongreldogma!
Love the name mate. good to see you aboard the crazy train
Thanks for the tips wokkaboy. I found out the veneer was pretty thin, BEFORE I read your post. No major damage just a bit see through on an edge or two. I will definitely ask plenty of questions before i stick that neck on.
Welcome Mongrel and a great looking kit!

Hi All.
I've put a stain on the top and the rest of the guitar as well including the neck. (Coolangatta Gold). I want to have a sunburst effect so I'm thinking I'll have to get some 'red' and 'black' stain to do this? I have the intensifying and final coats from the dingobass kit but will use these later I presume. I would like the back to have a lesser sunburst and the sides to be black and the headstock something like in the pic. (I also carved out a Les Paul shape here too). I would also like a lacquer finish. Can anyone reccommend what stains I should/could use? I've done a design for the headstock decal which I will get done as well. Also, does the neck go on after all the stains are done?
All your responses are much appreciated. Cheers.

wow, the gold looks nice
The gold has really bought up the grain and the flame on that top, its almost a shame to cover it with the burst. Maybe a subtle one just hugging the outer edges?
Hey Franken you may be right there. The stain has really bought the flame out. I've always liked the sunburst thing but for something a bit different I might just leave it. Maybe just a dark stain on the edges and back. Also, all the gear is black (one of the options in the kit).
Yeah, the Burst is classic but sometimes less is more. Dark edges and rear for sure, really make that top pop against the black hardware.
In terms of the stains and finishes, from a handling point of view, its far easier to get the bulk of your staining and maybe the first couple of coats of finish onto the body and neck as separate components. You'd insure that you don't get any stain or clear coat in the joint or on the neck tenon so that the glue can bind properly when you set it.
Once the neck is set and solid, you can finish you last couple of coats of clear, wet sand and flatten and then final coat and polish.
There's nothing to stop you from setting the neck first, but I found with my Explorer that having to do it all with the guitar in one piece was a massive pain in the butt and it also hampered my work. I ended up having to sand back as I really wasn't happy with the result, and I ended up making a jig to hold the guitar as an assembly while I started the restaining and refinishing.
Thanks for the tips Franken. I will definitely hold back on the sunburst. Any recommends for the black stain? After that I will probably apply the intensifying coat from the dingobass kit and check in again. I don't really do forums much but already I can see the value!
Say if, in your case, you built an explorer and had the same issues, can I check out your thread from previous builds to get fixes? Its probably easier to read through than hassle with questions all the time?
By all means mate, go ahead,http://www.buildyourownguitar.com.au...ead.php?t=4846 this s the entire point of the forum after all!
Feel free to cast derision and disbelief on the fact I elected to chop my very first guitar kit to bits before putting it together!
For black, I've used the Black Stump dingo tone, though others have used feast Watson proof tint, various aniline dyes, black shoe dye, shoe polish, inkjet printer inks and all manner of other tints and concoctions for varying shades. I have also used India ink at varying concentrations to help colour maple etc.
Wow! Might have to crush up some charcoal!
Best use for decaf I have ever heard LOL.
When I worked for a Big Insurance Company based in Queen Street a few years back it always used to crack me up when one of my male colleagues would order a skinny half strength decaf on soy or almond milk! Why bother wasting money on something that tastes so bland?
My motto is if you are going to drink a decent cup of coffee make it a good strong one and have early in the day if you are worried about caffeine keeping you awake at night.
There's nothing like a good decent cup of strong coffee to perk you up in the morning, I have a packet of Robert Timms brand Coffee grinds in my kitchen cupboard which I'll empty out into the coffee jar in the morning, I was waiting till I'd finished-off a small jar of Maccona brand instant coffee before I opened up the packet.
That's interesting, for me it doesn't really make any difference whether I drink instant or ground coffee, the effect is pretty much the same, coffee contains a substance called Caffeine, Caffeine is basically a stimulant, I've read online somewhere that if a person drinks enough cups of coffee they can start having hallucinations, whether that is true or not is open to debate, I just made myself a nice cup of Robert Timms coffee and it was quite enjoyable, I used a product called Coffee Mate as a whitener, I definitely prefer the taste of coffee made from coffee grinds to instant coffee, which tends to have an artificial taste to it.
It's something in that "Artificial" quality that does it to me I'm sure Doc. It seems particularly bad with the powdered versions. Moccona less so, but it still gets me a wee bit.
Yay Mongrel! I'm getting my LP-1 today as well!
We shall share our builds on the forums!
Mine arrives today - I've told the missus that if she leaves the house today she can sleep on the couch. Her response to that was that I can sleep on the couch anyways. So YAY! More time with the guitar :p
*cough* I think Im developing an illness - I might not be able to go into work tomorrow... Might have to get a round of guitar body sanding antibiotics into me *cough... fake wheeze... cough*.
YAY!
Yes I used coffee on my sister's build, see link, it was Maccona...
There definitely is something going around depictedminds, best play it safe and stay home sanding recuperating. You don't want to get the whole office sick eh?
Y'know what *Cough, sniffle* I feel some Treble-itis coming on....need to go home and take a hefty dose of newly acquired baritone. *cough* splutter.
silly, everyone knows Moccona is tone coffee....
But you never know, the tone may be a bit more refined if you use proper coffee grinds....hahahaha.....
Discovered this one recently and reckon it is about as good as you can get for an instant coffee. Downside is it costs just a bit over $10 for the 100g size. If we are talking grinds, when over in WA a couple of years ago discovered Yahava in Swan Valley and they are also down at Margaret River too. Best coffee anywhere and frequently order online along with plenty of their Peppermint Tea for the missus too.

Now Frankie, given your hypothesis above what axe style would this one be?
One thing is for sure, I reckon it would be right up Dedman's alley as he seems to currently have a penchant for things that are green.
