Yes, the headstock does look a little rough in comparison, but you can still fill it. I'd use a black stained filler as the little pockets in the wood are showing up as a lot lighter than the rest. The Gibson 'TV yellow' LP Juniors were grain filled after the first coat of paint had been sprayed on, so it's been done before.

It took me a few projects to learn about the wisdom of grain filler too. Finishing a couple of my current projects are more work than they need to be because of that oversight. Oh well.

Your LP is looking great so far. Nice work on the burst!

But I guess I have to do the whole headstock and then sand it down? Or would you suggest to do only the edges where the black stain is now?

I'd try a couple of thin filler coats, scraped off as much as possible before it dries to minimise any sanding. It's a small area to sand and it's flat. It should look a lot better in the end.

It has been a while since my last posting but I very busy at work. Today I found some hours to spend on the build and I thought it would be nice if I could apply the first coat of pore filler on the neck and body.

I had my little can of Rustin's pore filler and I mixed it with white spirit to get a 'soupy' substance. I took a rag and took a deep breath (because the substance looked like something that was not good anymore) and I started on the neck...

I ended up with a horrible looking neck :( I have to wait for an hour to let it cure bit I'm into a lot of sanding I think...

It will all turn out great in the end I'm sure. The grain filler sands pretty easy and what's better than sanding... I really don't like sanding but every time I think I have something ready to finish I find more places to sand... can't wait to see the finished project I love that red mate..

I hope you are right Drummerdude. When it comes out as I hope I can start applying the colors to. My intention is to do a sunburst on the back as well. So fingers crossed!

Ok, I did a lot of sanding yesterday and I applied the first coats of black stain. It dried overnight and today (if I can find some spare time) I'm gonna sand down the grain and put another coat of black on it.

I must admit that it looks rather good :)

Some progression made; I sanded the neck with 400 grit, just to make it smooth again and then gave it another two coats of black stain. Also applied more red and black the the headstock:

Next, I applied the porefiller to the back and sides of the body. Only difference with yesterday when I did this on the neck was that I now rubbed of all the porefiller immediately after applying it.

That already gives a supersmooth feeling to the body. And the result looks like this:

I'll let it cure for an hour or so and then start sanding. After this I'm gonna start with applying the sunburst to the back. The sides will become black... Can't wait!
