Phroz STA-1M, ST-M, TL-1

It's fitted like that because the TOM style has a limited saddle adjustment range, so the bass end needs to be further away from the nut than the treble side (1/8" or 3mm), in order for the saddles to be in the right area to allow for correct intonation. The Nashville style TOMs have a larger adjustment range than the original ABR style TOMs, so allow a slightly sloppier fitting (plus a wider range of string gauges).

You won't want the string ferrules too close to the bridge position. The strings should travel from the top of the saddles down to the body without touching the rear of the bridge. Make the holes too close and they'll catch it. So you'll need to work out where and how high the bridge is likely to sit, and then use a straight edge to determine the nearest position the string-through ferrules can be (allowing for some deviation from your estimated bridge height). An adjustable height stop-tail is a lot easier in this respect. You won't want the ferrules too far away either. You'll probably have them between 60 and 90mm back from the bridge (the higher the bridge, the further back the ferrules need to be). Up to you whether you want to use straight, staggered or curved lines for the ferrules, you can find examples of each type searching on line.

hey guys did the string ferrules top and bottom and the bridge it was nerve racking as took he the whole day before i was confidence to drill it the 5mm top ferrules i used a 3/16 drill bit which was 4.72mm and the 6.5mm bottom ferrules used a 1/4 drill bit which was 6.2mm both fitted good Thanx goes to Simon B and Sonic for the advice which i would have buggered it up with out there input the bridge inserts where 6mm so just did a 5.5mm drill

ok guys finally finished had some issues in the set up i had to replace 3 frets as had a number of dead notes over the neck as not set right before it was glued in the nut was glued crooked which i replaced any way. It would be the worse neck i think i have had, i would not recommend this kit to any one who hasn't done a few kits, 1st problem was the binding looks like it was put on before the quilt veneer so the veneer sat up 1mm higher than the binding and in places over the binding so sanding it down with out going through the veneer had its problems also some of the binding was put on by Edward scissorhand pieces missing or cut wrong then you haft to drill the holes for the bridge and tail piece easy enough if you know what you're doing which i didn't lol. Once you get all that sorted its a beautiful guitar i really haven't be able to take a pic to show how nice it looks finished, definitely in my top 3 guitars the 2 piece mahogany body was lovey bit of wood and the ebony fret board i really liked I will be doing another of them the experienced guitar builder is required to finish this kit

here it is finished and the last pic is the best pic's i could take to show the quilt used rit yellow dye and brown and lacquer over the top

Looks superb, Phroz. Yes, my GPR-1 is from the same factory and it left a lot to be desired compared to the other kits.

It's come together pretty well all told. Quilt looks great in the last shot.

That is HOT phrozin. Great finish as always.

@juanita thanx that one i did quite a wile ago was a ST-1M kit did just candy apple red was a basswood body which grain wasn't that good hence the colour, i actually sold that a wile ago done that many of them i lose track of them but have still got most of the ones i do i cant play Les Pauls as just to hard for me weight wise and i'm a huge Strat and super Strat and Tele fan, i'm going to watch your tele build as your doing a brilliant job specially with the veneer i predict a GOM coming up

Hey guys been doing a bit of work on my st1 i done this as a test what i have done is did the yellow dye and i used a Old Baltic stain then a lacquer over it, I wanted to know how well the stain would go as a burst and how it would go as done with spray and if i had any reactions with the clear lacquer. after a few different try's i wanted a better spray friendlier and that didn't soak in to the yellow, 1st off the stain has no body to it and soaked in to the wood so what i did was thin the stain using the 50ml bottle of Old Baltic with 50ml of gp thinners then i mixed up 50ml of clear lacquer then i added it to the stain mix which gave it more like a paint that didn't soak in to the yellow dye or the wood then it was really easy to get the burst that i was after, I didn't want super dark and transparent then 8 coats of Clear lacquer over the top here a couple of pics it came out better than i was expecting and opens up a few different colour combo's, i haft to polish it in a couple of days but pretty pleased with it.

hi guys and girls i been doing a few test runs on some rit dyes to see what works and what doesn't here are the ones i have used all except yellow were packets i diluted them in 120ml of fluid anymore than 150ml made them to light and required 4 or 5 coats i did 3 coats let them dry and wiped them down with wet sponge to the colour i wanted

here what works and what doeesn't

Yellow works great
Dark green didn't work just looked black
Navy blue didn't work just looked black
Scarlet worked great
Teal worked great
Kelly green worked great
Denim blue didn't work just looked purplish
Tan worked well
Black worked well

Going to try
sunshine orange
tangerine
pearl grey
wine
Fuchsia
Purple

here is a try of Kelly Green this is just my test body where i try things on it wont stay this but will give some of you guys what they sort of look like i have already posted pic's of some of the colours already
here what it looked like under 5 coats of clear tentative polish, i will try a few more this week but my lad brought a new car and wants me to cut polish it for him so ill be busy for a few days. If you want me to try other colours just let me know and ill do it

Hi all decided to leave it the green and black, done final polish and assembled it looks better than i thought that's it for a couple of a months or so as got heaps of stuff on my plate atm

here we go still the rit dye kelly green 3 coats with a mix of clear and black to tone down the harshness or the black for the burst, 8 coats of clear lacquer the pick guard i made out of alloy as cant buy them for the floyd rose and painted black couple coats of clear and did away with the neck plate

Not usually a fan of Green but that is a nice shade and looks superb as always with all your builds.

Thanx guys i haven't done to much this week but here is a quickie its not finished yet did a bit of polishing on it today, i figured that red is probably the no 1 colour for builds on here so i did this one so you can see how it went over alder i have done it RIT scarlet which is a bit darker than the red I did. Its same 120ml mix as the green one, same mix of clear and black for a less harsh light burst got heaps going on atm with legal stuff, so not sure when ill get around to finishing it, its a Strat i picked up cheap on gumtree with the boring old 3 colour burst amber, red and black which i hate

@ Dedman that's high praise mate as your in my top 5 builders on here 👍

here you go guys still lots to do on it, doing a custom alloy anodized red pick guard which is half made atm

hey phil like what was you thinking ? they don't sell Paul's anymore have thought about a hollow body but i have enough trouble with my Les Paul's and acoustics to hard to get a balance with, haven't played one for about 2 1/2 years i have done Ibanez's lag and a couple of Paul's some Tele's and of course Strats i mainly do them for myself and a couple for mates i don't do them to sell my lounge room is full of guitars lol, what prs i have been getting a bit bored with doing Strats ?

The SG Junior kit not interest you? Compact body shape and not too heavy.

What about something pointy like a V or explorer? The SGs are pretty fun as well as Simon suggested.

I know what you mean, I have more guitars than rack space at the moment. There really isn’t any logical reason to build more other than “I wanna”.

have a look in the Shred section Phroz. I just ordered a WL-1 without the floyd....it won't look much like a WL when I finish with it.

I'd love to see your paint on some of those shapes like the Ic, the WL and the BC. Of course you could always go low end....a bass?

Firebird shape might work as not as elongated as an explorer and quite well balanced when played sitting down.

Real ones are heavy though, and need a special stand (as does an explorer, though not so heavy), so probably less convenient for Phroz.

100% Simon right on the money, i mainly do them for myself or close mates and being in a wheelchair its a struggle to hold it and if the body is heavy (arla les paul) its a struggle to just hold it let alone play it, i have been thinking about doing some hollow body's but not quite sure which, having a room full of guitars isn't a problem as i play them all and none sound or play the same, i'm in the middle of a Lpaul for a friend so ill be ordering a couple of kits soon but won't be strat family.I have a few different finishes i want to try, SG is a candidate my missus used to play an EX which she loved. leave it with me and i might surprise every one. thanx for the input guys food for thought ....

hi guys couple i'm currently doing only just up to the clear stage but coming along nicely front is just a yellow dye rear and sides is walnut stain body was a nightmare high and low spots around the binding, i had to clear and sand back with 600 grit 6 times almost used 2lt of clear each block was 9 coats but looking nice a flat now so should polish up real nice still have heaps of work to do on it not sure if its a keeper till i finish it and have a pick

all done have another hollow body coming yellow dye front back side and neck walnut took a fair bit of sanding every couple of coats of clear still waiting on some mother of pear sheet to finish the head stock and logo
