Hey wokka,
I think the template moved ever so slightly which caused me to have to re-cut both times.
Haha I've used plenty of routers... just bad habits 😜
I do agree with using a pattern following bit, but this is all my FIL brought over. Still happy with the end result, no one (except all you guys) will know haha
3rd video done! Sanding of body... a little boring but time lapse's are fun!

Prepping and editing the shaping of headstock & sanding of neck video :)
Dropping them like its hot tonight! 4th Vid - headstock shaping & sanding of neck!
https://youtu.be/uWLEy-q3yO4
good work Shaz, you have probably finished sanding the body but hope you went easy sanding the flame maple veneer !
EDIT just saw the neck video, headstock shape looks good. Did you do a mock build with the neck in place and 3 pups and check the 12th fret to bridge distance ? Think you have already done this !
Yeah went super light on it :) the stain dries a bit darker... hopefully the grain shows nicely still!
Haha totally just drew a line and went for it, but I really like it!
Yeah it all fits :) I did initially have to adjust the neck as the top part of the mounting block overhung about 3 mm so I notched it out so the pickup fitted, didn't take any length off the neck and it's perfect length :)
Great video diaries Shazz and hope your enjoying your study break - the build is coming along nicely and well done with the routing
Shaz, well done on all your vids, really like them all, it was seeing the ones for the GR-1SF that inspired me to give it a go and got me into my first purchase from Pitbull, Adam should be paying you commission....
Dang it!! I've just remembered I'm meant to do a black undercoat and sand then start applying the finish 😭😭 I've already almost finished the top.... might have to do a sand back and start again
It's all ok! I did a light sandback and the grain is still sweet 😁
Well done Shazz, don't let the little things get you down.
So this is the stain 😁 Has come up really nicely! I thought the black might've been a bit darker but it's a real translucent black, still digging it though! I might do a once over with the black before sealing it with a gloss coat but. Attachment 20378Attachment 20379
Noice this is going to be one cool axe
oooo poiple black goodness!
that black will darken a bit with the clear Shaz. My Vee looked almost grey and pink before the clear coats
the timbermate I used for popping grain did yes.
Back to the books for me 😭 So far I've done the staining, just working out which gloss clear to use. Currently have 2 testers on the go, dulux duramax and rust-oleum 2x. Am hoping to be able to do weekend work until she's done, can't wait to play her!
Bummer that usual mundane things can get in the way of creative pleasures.
Love the dye job Shaz. That looks really great. Can't wait to see some clear on there!
cheers,
Gav.
Thanks Gav! I'm really happy with it. Dye's are a new medium for me, I think I've done fairly well :) cause they were 2 different brands the consistencies were a little different so it was like 2 different approaches to the same thing. But the result is something I'm happy with :) just gotta apply 2nd coat to the neck and it can get cleared as well :)
Thanks heaps, personally i think you did an awesome job, most guys wouldnt even think of trying to route a new pup cavity, i know id have second thoughts!.
Well thanks to your videos i used a router for the first time to deepen a bridge cavity so i could fill it in and i am stoked. Youve gotta hand it to everyone here, they are all willing to give anything a go, and if theyve already done it are at the ready to help.
Cheers keep up the awesome work Shazz.
hey shazz do you mind if I ask a few questions about the gr-1 sf, if / when you have the time ..thanks.
the purple looks amazing Shazz, you're doing a great job
Hey Nullig, go right ahead :)
If you want to ask on my other forum thread here's the link http://www.buildyourownguitar.com.au...ead.php?t=4174
So here is what the final stain looks like. This is just wiped down, no clear yet. Just waiting to do a polish on the test pieces to see which comes up a better finish.

Shazz looking good. I think it's worth trying to smooth the blend line go for one more colour coat. Try and darken the black edge, then keep rubbing purple (in a circular motion) along the transition area and you should smooth it out. A good burst takes many many coats to get a really smooth transition. When the clear goes on the transition will be highlighted even more.
I know its easier said than done because some areas 'take' the stain better than others, but worth trying to blend the colours smoother.
What are you using a wipe on poly/tru oil for the clear coats ?
Hey wokka, I can't seem to get the black any darker :( it's a really thin dye. I've applied about 9 coats so far and the last 4 haven't done much. I don't want to do to much more and wreck what I've already got. It looks smoother in real life too haha
I'm going to use a spray clear and do a polish on top.
