flame and spalt, you hit the jackpot with this one!
Looking great so far, very nice colour on the back and neck. Can't wait to see how that top comes up!
So!! My DT stain has finally arrived! Thanks to that patch of water between Tassie and the mainland, we get penalized with slow shipping.
OK, so as mentioned, the plan is to do the clear coat with a very subtle moonburst. I've picked up a cheap airbrush kit from Supercheap, and I'll have a play over the weekend with the black stain I got from DB.
Question.... Can DT be used in an airbrush, and if so, does it need to be thinned slightly, and if also so, with what?
Never heard of that! (booom mindblow!)
As its all natural product, I am not sure if I would be using a thinner with it.
Zandit, from my use of DT, especially the stain coats, I'd probably lean toward using the cotton rag application method as I usually work it into the grain. When I used black stump as the outer edge of my burst I used the rag and blotched it to feather the edges. Not sure if that helps, but good luck mate
Thanks for the tip Andy. I haven't had the chance to play with the kit this weekend. The wife took off for the weekend for my Nephews 18th B'Day, so I stayed home to look after the animals, and I should have spent some time on it yesterday but got distracted with nothing....I'm sure everyone knows how that happens!!
Today was a total wash out for me. I was asked to pick up my old original instrument of choice for a memorial concert.
https://scontent-syd1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...1e&oe=57EA6D1D
I used to play this in my younger years, and was a member of a local brass band. My old Bandmaster/Tutor/Mentor had passed away earlier this year, but I was unable to attend to his funeral. When they asked if I was interested in playing in his memorial concert I jumped at the chance.
Talk about jumping in the deep-end! It's been about 8yrs since I last played, and we had 2hrs practice this morning, followed by the 2hr concert after lunch. My top lip is still not talking to me from the punishment I put it through!! My left hand feels numb from holding the trombone, and my back hurts like crazy!
Sucker for punishment I guess!!
And guess what??!! I said I'll come to practice on Tuesday night too!!
Those things are the brass version of a fretless bass.
My eldest son played one of those in his school's big band and he eventually graduated onto playing Bass Guitar when that member went to Uni. Made sense at the time as he was reading the same clef on the charts. He plays 6 string guitar mostly these days.
Haha!! LMAO Waz, I never thought of it that way, but you are 100% accurate!
I also play Bass Trombone, so Bass Clef is second nature to me. The other trombones have to deal with Treble Clef, and also occasionally Tenor Clef, so they can keep that to theirself!!
Tenor Clef, that brings back memories from my high school music class and not too many of them were fond where Tenor clef was involved.
Who would want to be a Sax player? Always thought they sounded cool for some songs but a right proper pain if having to read charts.
There is a trick to it, but I can't remember what it is now. I was struggling to keep up enough as it was. I had played the majority of songs played at the concert in the past, but there was a couple of newbies there that we didn't even cover in the practice session, so I was sight reading during the concert!! Luckily we were double, and sometimes tripled up on parts as we had over 50 players on stage. There were 3 Bass trom players, 8 troms in total. It was an awesome sound!
Would have been a very fat sounding bottom end and with 50 players on stage too hard to pick exactly who was out of tune or not on the right note.
Yeah, it was certainly a big sound. The age of the players ranged from 7 to 83!!
Hopefully you are nearer to 7 than 83.
Mind you, 83 is a top effort for someone to still get up on stage and belt out some tunes, particularly for 2 hours or so.
I'm borderline at 41!
Halfway mark then compared to the older dude.
Change of plans #ivelostcounthowmanytimesivechangemymind...
So I had a crack at using the black DT stain in the airbrush. That failed miserably on my test piece of timber, and I filled the shed up with this oily mist that hung around for a while until I opened up the rollerdoor. I played a little with rubbing a burst on my test piece, but that's going to have to wait for another project. I couldn't wait any longer so I just went with straight clear DT on the front......
I'm pretty disappointed.....NOT!!!!

That Flame and Spalt is awesome!!!
Thank you Dingo and Andy for helping me out with my inquiries, and while it took awhile to get here(Thanks Aussie Post!!) the results are fantastic!
looks unreal Zandit, thought you were going a natural top from the start. You certainly scored a top quality veneer spalt and flame
I was tossing up between two ideas, but originally the plan was for the green shown on that PRS earlier in the thread, but I changed my mind there because I didn't want to lose any of the figuring and flame. The last plan I had was for a very light burst, but I'm extremely happy with how this is already looking.
I'll have a crack at the green on the next build.

it ain't a Hemi but i like it...
Hey Franken we've seen that meme before nice work mate!
Zandit, I totally understand flip flopping on plans, did that for over a month or so on my SGD build before i settled on the DT burst.
I must say......going natural on that spalt..... is freakin' awesome.
Hey Franken it was probably a different meme from the same movie, don't worry mate it's all good to see anything funny or amusing !
@ Zandit I reckon your spalted cap is one of the best I've seen on a PBG kit. So glad you went natural. It's going to look sick when it's had all the final coats on and buttoned up !
Hey Zandit the dark spalt lines will work very well with the black hardware. I built one of the first LP-1S axes and I did a clear top and looks the biz. It also won me my first GOTM, but back then there weren't many entries !
EDIT 200 posts you are on fire Zandit, keep boxing on mate ! Actually I just remembered I stained the top wudtone Burning sun (orange) and hot auburn back and sides
All crap talk and thread jacking aside, that outcome for your first build is absolutely killer. Your treatment of this has shown massive respect for the natural beauty of the veneer and it is an absolute winner. As Wokka has pointed out, once you get the black hardware against it for contrast it is going to look amazing. Sometimes less is more...Great Job!
Thanks Franken, that means a lot!

If I put on another coat of stain, will it go darker?
I'm really happy where it is now, so I'm thinking of going straight to the intensifier coats.
looking unreal Zandit. So you're using DT clear coats ? sure go for the intensifier. Get a few coats on will look sweet. Give it minimum 3 days curing between coats. It will go a little darker but not much.
Thanks Wokka, most appreciated.
Yes, I am using DT, and that is only a single coat of the Clear DT Base Stain. I'm going to give it longer since we are experiencing a severe cold snap at the moment, we have received some snow here on the coast!
Tonight I've been playing around with some logo designs. My brand name(even though I'm not selling anything!) is CQC, which stands for Custom Quaile Creations, Quaile obviously being my surname.
Here are a couple of attempts in Paint. Which one stands out for you guys?
#1

Or #2

None of these are set in stone, and I may come up with something else. I'm also not ruling out someone else's option either, so if we have a logo guru around, please feel free to chip in!
bottom one is a bit too abstract on the Q, looks a bit too much like a staked O :)
is that possible?
