Zandit's First Build Thread

Hi all,
Thought I better get a start on my build thread. I'm ordering the LP-1S kit with black hardware tonight, looking to go with a jade green top/Black Ink back. My inspiration is attached below to show you what I'm going for.

Disclaimer - I'm a Noob at everything involved in this project, so expect some(**Many!!

) questions coming your way.
While this is my first build, I plan on taking it slow and easy. I'm not an electric guitar player, and I don't have an amp at this stage, but I seriously want to have a crack at this build.

So I better get some questions started.
I see lots of references to Naughty Oil, True Oil, Dingo Oil etc. The last two I can understand, but what is Naughty oil, and do I get into trouble just for asking this??!!

Solder - Never even attempted this before, so can someone please recommend a type, plus do I require flux? I'm assuming a wiring diagram will come with the kit?

In regards to finish, I have some very limited experience in this. I built our dining table, and bench seats to go with it, and used a black stain on them which I bought from the big green shed(Are we not allowed to mention this place either??!!

) I used a clear coating on this, I'll add the details later when I get home as I'm technically cheating at work!!

Naughty Oil is Tru-Oil from what I can gather. Naughty because it has chemicals in it that DB doesn't like. It's used on gun stocks mostly. We tried to get a list of things that DB doesn't like but it would be ecologically unsound to use that much paper and the pdf version threatened to break the interwebs with it's enormity.

Soldering, its easy. I had never soldered anything other than guttering which is slightly different :P Watch the build video ( http://www.pitbullguitars.com/guides/) and it really is that simple. I got a 60w iron from the shed of un-named greeness and it works fine. If you buy solder marked for electronics I think it has a fine core of flux in it. I've not used extra flux.

Finishing is much the same as you did on your table, just beware that the veneer on some kits is VERY thin, so be careful when sanding.

Best idea is to read through a few build diaries of your kit and see what people stumbled with and how they got around it.

I don't mean any disrespect against the sponsors of the site, but if this is usable, I'm not going to waste it.

I'll throw my two cents in Zandit75. I find that the finish that you're after is a personal search for you. I'd thoroughly recommend trying a number of different types or tests on a scrap bit of pine to see what suits you before applying to a kit.

Personally for me, I've done a few tests using different types of furniture and decking stains and have been very disappointed with the lackluster results. They may look good on furniture but there is I think far better stuff to finish guitars with. Some of the guys seem to have good results but not me. Same with finishes. I can't see how a varnish would give you a great feel to the guitar, but then again if that whats your after go for it.

I've finished a guitar in nitrocellulouse and one with tru-oil. I'm 4/5 into finishing a guitar with dingotone. I've found all of those finishes are good, but I'm definatley swaying towards dingotone as the best. some guys have found it a bit finnicky but I've found that Truoil and nitro and poly are also.

Anyway mate, whatever you choose, good luck ask as many questions as you want.

Thanks guys, most appreciated. I have the guitar and copper shielding sitting in my cart as we speak, and I'm just tossing up what to do about the top.The DT Tarkine green doesn't look to have the same pop as what I am chasing in the above picture, so I'm wondering what would be the best way to achieve that colour.
Any advise would be appreciated also.
