I've just found that if I do it that way, it gives better contact and reduces noise more.

I have used mostly Aluminum HVAC tape. When I discovered that I could not solder it, I got some copper tape for guitar that was a lot more expensive. I soon discovered that the copper tape did not take solder any better than the aluminum tape. It was only then that I discovered that the bother the copper* and the alu adhesives were nicely conductive. [Insert headslap here].
Even after applying liberal amounts of Alu Tape to my insulating-the-garage-door project, I still have what looks like a luthier's Lifetime supply of alu tape...which amounts to pennies per guitar.
*Some people have no trouble soldering copper tape so YMMV.
