New guitar builder, paranoid about screwing it up...

    Hi all,

My name's Jono, and I'm in Perth, south of the river.
After many months of researching guitar kits (PBG in particular), my wife picked up on my hints and bought me an LP-1MQ kit for my birthday.
So I'm super excited about building this kit but also a little intimidated about screwing it up (mainly the wafer thin maple veneer...). I'm planning on starting a build thread fairly shortly and I have a few questions already, so I'll post them there. Hopefully, after hearing some of your advice, I'll feel a bit better when I take the leap and cover the maple with black ink to pop the grain...

Looking forward to meeting some new people, hearing some ideas and hopefully also sharing some of my own.

    Cheers,

    Jono

Welcome to the nut house Jono!
Sounds like you have the dropping hints technique down pat!!
As long as you take your time, you'll be right. If unsure, ask before taking the plunge.
As they say around here, the only dumb question is the one you don't ask!
Have fun, and I look forward to seeing you build thread!

    Welcome Jono,
I just got my LP-1M kit. First time for me too!
I've been sanding the veneer with 240 grit paper and will finish up today with 400.
So far so good! It is a bit scary seeing how thin it is! I'll be going easy...

Yeah good idea Stewart, you want to go REALLY gently with the Veneer sanding. There's not a lot of meat there. All you really want to do is knock back any fuzzy bits or address any bad scratches.

Welcome Jono - quite a few on the forum are Perthites - I'm north of the river. LP's are nice kits. Don't stress too much with the kit - I ended up dropping one of mine just before I put it together (it was stained, polished, etc). Take your time and any time you are not certain - ask questions. Another word of warning - if you ever feel you're rushing (I just want to get this done before...), stop then - that's exactly when something will go wrong... It'll still be there tomorrow.

When you ask questions, as they say a picture can tell a thousand words - take a piccie and attach - it'll save the invariable - "Have you got a photo?" response - and time at your end.
