    Binding glue

    Hi there,

While doing the first in-depth check of my GR-1SF kit the other day, someone (not me) managed to knock the neck off the table where I was working, and it fell right on the corner at the 22nd fret on the top side. About half an inch of the binding came away and it also looked like the fret had come out a bit, as the binding was stuck on it - should have taken a photo but I wanted to see if it would just go back the way it was. I managed to get the binding unhooked from the fret wire, and pushed it back into place. Now the binding won't sit against the neck unless I hold it. So am thinking I can probably glue it back on and clamp for a while to fix it.

So - what sort of glue should I use? I have some of the neck glue from PBG that came with the guitar, is that sufficient or do I need some other type?

    Cheers,

    Pete

Hi Pete (Griffin), you can't use Titebond. If you have some CA glue (superglue) put a couple of drops on the binding and clamp it. Wipe off any excess glue before it dries. I usually use tarzan grip for binding but CA glue should do the trick. Sounds like you are lucky and should be able to save the neck fall !

Agreed, superglue will do the trick in this case. Woks, doesn't Tarzan Grip expand slightly as it dries?

Hey Pabs, not sure the tarzan grip seemed to work ok for me. I'm sure there are better glues to use for binding, I have forgotten what DB recommends these days

i agree that super glue should work fine, but work quickly, if you need a little time use one of the gel types.
sikaflex make good versions of both and the big green shed has it...

Ok thanks fellas. I have some Loctite gel superglue so will give that a try. Not really looking forward to doing it but hopefully it won't be too noticeable

    Cheers

works well but you must be fast and accurate as it melts the binding to make it stick - good for hiding joins though for the same reason

The Gavmeister (Gavin1393) uses Tarzan's Grip for his acoustics and electronics for binding - easy to put on and scrapes away after it dries.

Ok, so thought I would post an update after repairing the damage.

Here's what it looked like after being knocked off the table:

Used the gel superglue method, unfortunately, got a little on the fretboard as you can see in these two of it clamped:

Next day.... dunno WTF happened, as it was sitting in a spot where it couldn't be bumped, but, you can see there's now a gap between the binding and the fretboard. You can also see where the binding is chipped on the short side.

After a bit of sanding and lemon oil, doesn't look too bad. Not as good as original, but probably not noticeable if you didn't know it was there.... unfortunately my stupid OCD brain will remind me about it forever more. I will likely lemon oil the fretboard during the build, so it will look darker overall.

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated!

    Cheers
