    Smile First Time Introduction

    Hi All,
My name is Tony Miers (Alias TonyM), 64yrs old and have just taken up playing again after a 45 yr break! I am enjoying myself and have just taken delivery of an ES-1G kit. I am planning on finishing it with Dingotone Bushfire Sunrise. Unfortunately due to time contraints it will be a slow build but am keen to hear of any tips from other builders.

Hi Tony, welcome to the forum, wow 45 year break from playing guitar, I bet you are glad you have taken it up again and building a kit is very addictive ! Bushfire sunrise one of my favourite DT colours.
Start a build diary and do a mock build to make sure it all fits together and all the parts are there.
Rub a water damp cloth over the body to check for any glue marks. Start sanding and beware the flame maple veneers are thin so start sanding the veneer on at least 240 or 320 grit paper. Rest of the body and neck can sand from about 180 grit to 320/400 grit.

Good luck with the build !

Ask any questions you have in your build diary. The wiring is probably the most difficult part of the build and setting (gluing) the neck the most important

Thanks for the quick response and tips. I am not too stressed about the wiring as I built a couple of amplifiers when I was a teenager, but I am stressed about the neck setting. I am thinking that I should set the neck before sanding in case I damage my perfect(??) finish during the setting process. Also there are slight gaps in the join that I would like to fill. What do you think?

Hi Tony, no worries sounds like wiring won't be an issue. Up to you when you glue the neck, some prefer to finish separately and some prefer to glue it and work on the whole guitar. You should be ok to sand the neck and body before gluing the neck. Be better chance of getting a better finish in the neck transition if you set it before the staining and clear coats.
Please start a build diary and post a photo of the neck fit. If there is a gap of about 1mm or more then you may have to glue a thin veneer to the pocket. Less than half a mm the glue will fill the gaps

Hi again wokkaby, this might sound silly, but how do you start a build diary?

Hi Tony all good mate, go to the 'Forum' button top left --> 'My build diary' button then 'Post new thread' button then put in a title for your build like Tony's ES-1G build and then post some comments.
To post a photo go to the 'Go advanced' button below, then 'manage attachments' button, locate the photos and hit upload. Note images have to be under 1MB in size or below 1500 x 1500 resolution

Welcome along - don't worry about taking time - we're more worried about the 24 hour build - quality takes time!
