My Peavey Renown Solo 160 Watt Solid State Amp

    Hi everyone,

I thought I would start yet another thread about my Peavey Renown Solo 160 Watt Solid State guitar amp a great friend of mine gave me, it was originally a 2 X 12 Combo amp but had been made into a head, at some stage this year I'm going to see if I can build a 2 X 12 speaker cab for it so I can use it as a gigging amp.

Here's a pic of the amp as is, the black knobs on it aren't the original ones, but seeing as most of the original ones were missing I decided to put the black ones on as a way of customizing the amp, I think they look great:

At some stage I might see if I can make a front baffle that fits just under the amp chassis, I was thinking about it last night and thought that the amp would look cool if I covered the front baffle with some coloured cloth of some kind, maybe a Paisley pattern perhaps.

So the amp has two footswitchable channels plus footswitchable reverb, my mate also gave me the footswitch for the amp too.

FWIW I think these may be the coolest DIY cabs for guitar.

I have two of Bill's cabs for bass (a DR and a Titan) and plans to build two Jacks in the near future. Great forum, as well.

Cool amp head Doc. Yeah I'd get some cloth to cover the big gap at the front. Is the casing looks like a Marshall?
You could even get a custom logo made up. Doceavey hahaha

Hahahaha..., I'd get a few laughs with that mate.

From what I understand, the casing was the original one the amp chassis was in but it got cut down to the size of an amp head, I'm seriously thinking of making a front baffle for it to go just underneath the chassis to close-up that open section, I'm also thinking of going with a Paisley Cloth covering for the front baffle, just for something different, I think it'll look cool.

Last night I did a bit of work on it to attach the reverb tank to the bottom of the cab using four wood screws.

sounds good Doc, cool project, can't wait to hear how loud it is with your twin 12" cab. What sort of speakers you planning to use ?

Not sure what speakers I'm going to use, the originals were Scorpions, but I was thinking that maybe a pair of Eminences might work, I was toying with the idea of building a 4 X 10 cab using four Jensen C10Q speakers, but that would only give me a power handling of only 140 Watts, and my mate reckons a 4 X 10 or 4 X 12 may be a bit too unmanageable when it comes to lifting it up a flight of stairs to get it into my flat, I'll have to do some netsurfing so I can figure out the best speaker to use.

yeah a 4 speaker cab up stairway would be a right pain. The Celestion speakers are very good too

That's a cool old beast of an amp, I like your ideas for personalisation, a couple of celestion greenbacks might go well with it
