    RD-4 First time build

Hello ladies and gents. I started this build about a week ago after practicing my staining skills on a 2x4, and it's going great so far! I'm using Minwax Polystain at the moment, which actually doesn't look that bad to my surprise. I currently have two coats on with one coat left to go before a protective coat. I'll keep you guys and gals updated, cheers!

Not seen one of these built before, certainly looks different! Love the depth of colour you've gotten there.
Did you have to grain fill and do you know what the body wood was?

welcome to the forum BombsAway, build is looking good, looks like the RD-4 has the 3 point bridge, beware on the ESB-4 kits these bridges were pulling the 2 rear bushes out of the body under string tension - they are a bad design.

What sort of black paint did you use ? never seen mini wax over paint seems to work ok !

Love the curing rack you made !

Thanks man! And no fill which should be worked out after some sanding and a couple more coats (the poly is pretty thick). And the website says Bass wood which I've never heard of, but has the consistency of pine; maybe a tad softer

And thanks @wokkaboy! The wood is pretty soft so I was thinking about milling some shims to set on the inside to avoid the damage, I think that's how Gibson did it on their RD customs. And it's a gloss black poly-stain that's pre-mixed by minwax, the first time I've used it.

Love it. Always had a soft spot for the RD shape.

Welcome along - looking great. Basswood is soft - that said, its being used by quite a few of the major builders - especially in some of their lower end guitars.

From memory, the RD's were all maple - I used to have an RD Custom back in '79 - not your average Gibson...
