G'day all,
I have read about Ry Cooder's modified strat with De Armond pickups.
I recently finished a DIY starcaster, you know the fender attempt at a 335.
Well I put GFS gold foil humbuckers in.
They're supposed to be a recreation of the De Armond gold foil pups, with authentic wire, magnets and bobbins and stuff.
I guess everything is the sum total of parts, but this thing sounds different to standard
gibson/fender tones. Warmth with clarity. sustain for days (almost).I know the hollow body would have a huge effect on tone, plus the brass nut I put on.
Anyway- to the point
I reckon a strat type HH configuration with these gold foils would be sensational. Plenty of fendery twang, but different in ? mids. They've got 4 leads, so you could coil split, but I really don't think you'd want to when you hear them.
They have a youtube video of an academic type woman playing some chordal things that give you a rough idea of the sounds. Check em out!!
