My name is Tony and I have a problem........

Hi Everyone, I bought my first kit a few months ago and almost immediately I felt a need, a compulsion to dream large and purchase more...and more etc. Is this normal? Damn you Adam DB and the rest of the Pitbull crew.

My reason for being here is simple....mantherapy.

    and..

My 8 yo daughter was selected to play bass as part of the school band (how cool is that? It was triangle or tambourine time when I was her age) and the schools loaner, a bigarsed MAN Bass is near impossible for her hold/carry/learn on.

So we decided that would solve the problem by building one together that she could use. The added bonus is that whatever design that she wanted, I would help her build (Warning: A fathers ability to talk up his skills is inversely proportional to his actual talent and experience)..

What will follow is our first build...learning together as we go... (with plenty of info already gleaned from these encyclopedic pages, thanks to all who have been before us for sharing!)

Welcome Tony. Yes, G.A.S. (gear acquisition syndrome) is a well documented and highly contagious disease around here. We all suffer with it (except Woks, who revels in it). Good luck with the build. Make sure you start a build diary so we can follow along with your progress (which is the polite way of saying we like to live vicariously through others builds)

welcome Tony, I agree with Dedman a HB-4 or 3/4 SG are pretty light and shorter 30" scale would be the most ideal bass kit to build with your daughter. Have a look at a spalted maple top they can look quite awesome with some stain

You'll have great fun doing the build with your daughter Tony. Like Woks I'd recommend the SG 3/4 easier to play for beginners.

Folks, it looks like we need to gather the troops for another GAS INTERVENTION.

While you're waiting, apkane, I second the HB-4 recommendation. I packed one shipping to South Africa today and was reminded what a cool little bass kit this is. I clearly remember playing the one DB built and it was so much fun! And sounded so good.
    Cheers,

    Adam

    Hi Tony,

First of all, I'd like to say welcome to this great forum, you'll probably find that the majority of us are only too happy to help other members having difficulties with their builds, and yes, I, too, suffer from G.A.S, not only guitars, but the extra stuff needed to be able to make music with guitars, I recently built an STA-1M kit and was very impressed with the quality of the woods used in it, Wokkaboy, Dingobass, and a few other members were awesome helping me with my build, so don't be afraid to ask, also, I did some mini-tutorials, there's one about soldering, another one that's about using a multimeter, there's also one about building fx pedals, feel free to check them out, good luck with your builds.

Hey DrNomis, we'll be checking out your mini-tutorials on the weekend. Certainly like the idea of building fx pedals.
