    Lyn #14 - Solid-body Acoustic

    Here we go again.

    Another scratchie using only hand tools. Again in laminated pine. While I’m learning I might as well use up the timber I have laying around.

    Usually by the time I start a build I have done my research and have a pretty fair idea of what I’m doing, but with this one I am basically making it up as I go along. So needless to say I am not overly confident about the prospects of a successful build.

    I am going to try and build a solid body “acoustic” guitar. Acoustic as in she won’t have any magnetic pickups but an under saddle Piezo pickup. Even if I pull this off I have no illusion that it will sound like an acoustic guitar but my hope is that she will sound a little bit acoustic-ish in a mix with other guitars.

    The piezo pickup I have is for an acoustic guitar but the pre-amp unit is too large and will not fit on the treble (or upper) bout of the guitar as it would do on a real acoustic. So I will have to mount it somewhere in the body and also remotely locate a 9v battery somewhere as well. This will mean access to volume, EQ etc will be very limited/impossible while playing. If I am game I will try and mount a second volume pot in a convenient position, but even with Scott’s help I feel out of my depth with this. I am quite prepared to use this one as a test-bed for a future build.

    Anyhoo, I have cut out the 3 piece body sections and roughly shaped them. I now have to figure out what routing I will need for the pre-amp unit, the battery and a volume pot before I glue it all together. I also have to figure out how to get access to all the wiring once the body is glued topgether.

    This is my biggest challenge yet, should be fun.

    Pics:
    Pic 1 – The 3 piece body roughly cut. The central layer is marine ply and has been cut more accurately with a coping saw.
    Pic 2 – The body before being attacked with my new toy, the Japanese Saw Rasp.
    Pic 3 – Still rough, but close enough to start routing out the cavities.

    OOOOOOH! A blind build! Love it already Robin 😀
    One of these days I will write an article on design principles and the difference between a pre conceived and blind build.
    But for now, a few good examples of these principles are,
    Pre conceived - Fender Telecaster
    Blind - Fender Stratocaster.
    I will leave it there for now 😉

    Looking forward to some new ideas to steal off you Robin 😈

    There is always a workaround for glitches, mistakes and other Guitar building gremlins.....

    I thought a blind build was luthiery while under the influence of too many naughty cordials?

    @ Dedman
    Don't get too intrigued, this build has all the potential of a disaster waiting to happen. lol.

    @DB
    Haha, I don't think there will be anything steal-worthy in this one Phil. I'm just trying to think outside the box. Hmmm. Tele or Strat, I'd be happy to put my name on either.

    @Frank
    I usually steer clear of the naughty cordials while building, but in this case it might just help.

    hey Westie07, great you got another build underway, so will you have any open cavities like a thinline tele to make it sound more acoustic ?
    Sounds like a very cool build and you have more than enough experience to build on the fly. Look forward to following this thread.
    Still blows me away if there is no power all you need is light and hand tools to build !
    No power at my workshop and my biggest concern is how to keep the beer cold LOL

    That constitutes an emergency in my book. Massive diesel genset required on site with tanker on standby for re-fuelling as a mandatory precaution would be my advice.

    @Woks
    Hey Warren, although I thought seriously about chambering this guitar I decided against it. I want to keep this one simple as I just want to see if it works first. If the concept is a goer I will probably try another build with chambers to compare sound quality. Even so, it’s not my intention to ever use it unplugged so its acoustic value is rather mute. Pun intended

    I’ve already drilled some holes where I shouldn’t, so the “blind” build is going pretty much as I expected. Lol.

    As for no power tools, it’s no big deal. I am doing exactly what you do, it just takes a little longer.

    @Frank
    I’ll keep a generator on stand-by just in case.

    @Andrew
    Thanks mate, I’m a masochist.
