Thread: Redneck IB-5

    Redneck IB-5

So you don't have to guess what was lying in wait when I got off work!

Did the mock-up and everything lines up nicely!

I flattened the area where the bridge goes and luckily didn't mess it up - what I know of wood working is dangerous let alone luthiering*

Naturally I have some questions if you guys don't mind.

The crack on the last pic is still open, what do you guys propose? My dad - used to do alot of woodwork - suggested 'sanding sealer(sealant?)' What do you guys think?

What oil/product do I put on the fretboard?

I'll put the paint question with the next post

This is a rough scetch of what's going on the bass, designed by mine truly hehe.

She is hand painting it so we're wondering what the best undercoat and paint type is and any other pointers and advice you guys have?

Thanx guys and here's to my first build!

One more - the dot inlays, I don't like 'em

How do I get them out without messing up the fretboard?

My idea is to then fill the holes with orange paint or maybe drip orange plastic in there or any other orange substance to fit the headstock, any ideas?

Hey RR, cool plans. Check out this thread about removing fret dots

    http://www.buildyourownguitar.com.au...ead.php?t=1720

As for refilling them with orange, coloured epoxy would be a possibility or this method using tinted timbermate would work well

Hi Redneck, Can you have a look at Joe Pilers LP-1 build called Poinson Ivy. He has handpainted the guitar (in a green theme) and replaced the fret dots with dots cut from green pearloid guitar picks. It looks wicked.

Back of the neck is done, I used 'Arizona Orange' which is the only orange stain I could find in this prehistoric place
Tomorrow I will try to sand and stain the fretboard and sand the headstock. Oh and also polish the frets!
This is all just preliminary work as I've ordered dot inlays - only orange ones I could find was in China and minimum order is 50 whahaha! So then once the inlays are done I will do the entire neck again for final finish(after the headstock is painted).

The body is done sanded and ready to paint(I hope), I nearly messed it up twice - tried to cut a slot to give the bridge a flat seating which luckily I tested out first out of sight and then luckily saw that boat won't sail. Next was with so called wood primer which was a complete hoax and dissappeared into the grain(this is still slightly visible after sanding).
So now we've tested the paint(acrilyc by hand) on a couple other planks and it doesn't drain into the grain at all so I've sanded the body to a slight shine when it's held in the light(feels damn nice for a newbie I must say hehe) and handed it over to my GF for painting!

Nice one Redneck. that orange gives it a bit of a vintage vibe. Interested to see how the hand painting turns out.
