EX-1 vs EX-5 - pics that show the differences

Hi Folks, not sure how many people would contemplate building both Explorer styles and have attached some photos to show the slight differences.

Other than one being a set neck 6 string guitar and the other a bolt on neck 5 string bass there are a couple of distinct differences.

    (1) Position of output socket which is a direct result of where the (2) control cavity has been routed, which in turn relates to (3) where controls are located on the top. Otherwise they are identical in thickness, shape, and bodies weigh pretty much the same.

Obviously where and how the neck joins the body and also the necks themselves are the glaringly obvious differences and will post photos of those tomorrow.

Following neck shots have fret boards covered up as still finishing off but getting closer to fitting them to their respective bodies. Will post those shots as well to help show the differences.

In these shots the most obvious thing is the Bass neck being much longer as it has to accommodate 9.25" more scale length and surprisingly it is not too much wider across the fret board however it appears shallower with a slimmer profile compared to guitar equivalent.

The pointy headstock is closer to original design on the EX-5 and also has more rake. Probably the only disappointing feature of the EX-1 is the standard headstock which is quite blunt and stubby looking, not as angular as the original.

Thanks Guys, hope to eventually show a bit more of them both side by side right through to completion. Maybe I am not the only one who thought about building both Explorers and hope this helps anyone considering either kit.

Removed tape in readiness for attaching necks to their respective bodies and thought I would share pics of the neck ends that go into the pockets before they are permanently fixed. Plenty of shots......EX-1 Neck Pocket
