Thread: The Telecaster

    Cool The Telecaster

    Hi Folks;
    Like everybody else here, I guess, my first view of the kit was when I opened the box.
    I've gotta say I'm pretty damn excited to get started.
    This guitar is for my daughter and she's as excited as I am.
    She already owns an 'el cheapo' Strat (her first electric) and an Epiphone L.P. and is as keen as mustard for me to get this job done so she can give the Tele a whirl.
    We chose Coolangatta Gold for the body colour and Natural for the neck.
    I'm no stranger to working with wood and with electronics so this build should be a natural for me... that doesn't mean I won't be calling out for help if I get stuck though.
    Anyway... off to town now to buy a heap of sandpaper

    Hi Rob,
    welcome to the forum.
    build plans sound great and by the sounds of it you have enough experience to build a nice tele for your daughter.
    Start a build diary and post some pics of the kit you scored.
    Ask any questions there and best of luck with the build.

    Where abouts are you from ?

    Hi Rob,
    Nice kit for your daughter! I hope you don't have any trouble, like I am.

    Good luck and enjoy the build.

    Hi Rick;
    Sorry to hear you're having some trouble with your build... what is the major issue?

    This is the kit as it arrived in the mail... really quick postage from WA too :-)
    I spent 3 hours sanding the body today and it's now as smooth as a babys bum.
    I first used a fairly coarse paper, then a medium followed by a fine. I finished off with a real good work over with P1000 carborundum polishing paper (wet and dry).
    I'll shape the head and give the neck the same treatment as the body tomorrow.

    kit looks great Rob, so your daughter is a lefty hey.
    I wouldn't sand the body any more than about 400 grit as higher grits polish the timber surface and it won't take the stain as well.
    Same with the headstock face. Go nuts on the neck though can go to 1200 grit. Think you said natural colour neck.

    Rick was having issues getting the colour he wanted but he is very close (I think). I think he's being to hard on himself !

    Welcome along Rob - just started a Tele with my daughter as well tonight. She's still to settle on the finish though. Hope you have some fun Dad / daughter time though! Agree with Wokka on oversanding - its best to leave a little of the grain for the stain to bind to. That said - a quick once over with some 400 grit will restore that tooth.
