As carry on luggage is the only way to go.
My brothers Takamine in a locked hardcase had the soundboard cracked by Virgin baggage handlers between Brisbane & Sydney and he was told to f off when he complained. ( prove it wasn't cracked when we shipped it )
I'm very pleased my Tele Thinline survived with the same carrier coming back from Bali
More damage is likely from the robots that read the barcodes and push the luggage onto the correct conveyor belt.
