Right, I won't properly have time for a few months (Time and space, or lack thereof right now) actually, but I have decided to at least start my build diary to show what I have, and what I intend to do with it! A couple of pics:
Obviously I'm going to get a DiMarzio FS-1 pickup for the bridge, and leave the neck mini Humbucker as-is for the time being.
I knew fairly early on, that I was going to go with Wudtone for the finish of both guitar and neck. There are some reasons for this:
1) I am a complete beginner with any kind of guitar building/finishing, so to be doing this for the first time is daunting enough, let alone throwing spray cans with solvents into the mix!
2) Related to 1, in that these seem like a more "idiot-proof" way of doing things given my total lack of experience.
3) Why not take advantage of the wood grain?
4) Wudtone is a UK-based company anyway, and, the town they're based in (Usk) is not that far away from where I live, so it feels like I'm supporting a "local" company in that regard.
So, when I order the stuff, the neck will likely be aged vintage yellow (Pics I've seen of the amber one look a little too dark, so I think this will be just right) and I think I'm going to go for their "Cherry Flamenco" finish. It's described on their website as "Gibson SG fans dream colour." and the pics they have of guitars finished in this look good, and it'll look good with the kit's black pickguard. I was going to go for "Olympic Girl", seeing as it made sense as a Ramones fan to have this guitar in white, but it wouldn't look exactly right anyway, so why go for something that's not quite right, when I could pick something "different" and have it be more unique? I'm putting it together myself anyway!
As I say, it's going to be a while before I am able to make a proper start, but I wanted to share this stuff now, just so I can say I've got the ball rolling. Any thoughts, advice etc when I get underway is most welcome!
