    LP-1S Build

    Hi Guys,

Just started my first ever guitar build of a LP-1S. I've just applied the first coat of Dingotone stain after sanding. I seemed to have to sand a lot to remove timber imperfections......anyway I thought I'd post some pics before I go any further and see if people think the finish is ok. You can see areas where I've really had to sand back to get a perfect finish.

    Cheers

    Ryan

Ryan, you need to be really careful sanding back Spalted Maple. /for those in the 'know' will tell you that the gorgeous colour and grain in the Spalted Maple comes about because the wood is 'diseased'.
The other issue is that the spalted caps are always very thinly applied to the body of the guitar and if you go too far with your sanding you can expose the wood beneath the cap.

So, this all being said, there are imperfections in the spalted Maple. That's just how it is. Some will actually 'fill' the imperfections with some form of filler. Most of us won't do this and will only lightly sand the cap. these imperfections are part of the character of the guitar.

hey Ryan, nice looking cap you scored there. What Gavmeister said don't sand any further or you will sand through the thin cap. You can give the cap a light super fine 0000 grade steel wool in between coats. The dark spalt lines are caused by a fungus and this timber is highly sought after
Once these caps get a few more stain coats and a few layers of clear they really bounce and pop nicely.
Keep going with the Dingotone coats, is that Coolangatta gold ?
What colour you got planned for the back/sides of the body and the neck ?
    Current Builds and status
scratch end grain pine tele - first clear coat on !

Thanks guys, yeah it's Coolangatta gold. I was thinking of just finishing the rest of the guitar with the same, I'm open to suggestions though if you think something might look good with the Coolangatta on top.

    Cheers
