Thread: Josephs TLA-1

  1. #1
Hello guys, this will be a thread where I will probably ask many questions like "What can I do if my white pearloid scratch plate doesn't quite fit?!?!" and I will probably post several updates as to how it is going.

So far, other than my white pearloid scratch plate not quite fitting yet (I will find a way, trust me) this seems to be a flawless kit, no glue spots, no visible dents or cracks so it all looks fantastic.

At the moment I am planing to stain it a deep blue, almost purple-ish and have some Seymour Duncan 'Hot for Tele' pickups (I'm a fan of those pick squeals)

    Thanks guys,

    Joseph

    Looks great Joseph, welcome.
Quite a few Tele builds here, so no end of advice.

Hi Joseph! A great first build you have chosen - it won't be your last . For telecaster kits, it is very common for the scratchplate to need a little sizing around the neck heel. The scratchplates are all cut to a generic template and each neck has small variations. In my experience, the kit necks are all a little wider at the base than the template allows. Just carefully enlarge it with a file and all will be well.

Enjoy your build and keep us up to date with progress!

    cheers,
    Gav.

It's probably just a camera trick but it appears as though you've got some sneaky little custom body contours going on there.
Love your plans for the build man, should be a thing of beauty when it's all done!!

What Gav said. Loads of Teles, loads of experience around here. Plus, they are one of the less complex things to put together, so a good place to start. Get it right and it's the express train to the fun parts of Twang City.

Sanded it all down yesterday, making sure to get it all nice and smooth. I started with 320 Grit and moved down to 800 and then 1500, still going to do the 2000 grit today when I get home.

Mate because your staining this it is a good idea to leave the body wood a little rougher, around 400, so that the stain has some tooth to grab in to. Is this the alder kit?
