Thread: Shoeys STA-1M ash Naked

  1. #1
    Hi there,
So for my first build I thought I'd go simple. I have an early 70's P Bass (you know the naked with black pick guard standard) which was my first "real" instrument. So I figure why not go the same with my first build/kit.

So in preparation (I believe it'll turn up Monday) I've scoured the inter webs and watched countless how to vids on YouTube. I've decided on tru oil then a clear coat over that for the body and headstock. Not sure if it's tacky but I designed a little logo of sorts which I'll chuck a pic of up.

    Wish me luck
    Shoey.

Woks, pour a pint for Shoey...

Oh dear... Have I committed some PBG faux pas already??? I'll keep committing them if I get free pints though

In saying that, if a tru oil neck feels anything like a tru oil gunstock does, I may have to refinish a couple of my go to guitars. Love the feel of it.

I've seen a few logos on PBG builds and am going to do mine by hand, rather than the transfer type ones. It's a Sailor Jerry tattoo inspired design so it can afford to look a little "rustic". The kids and I are experimenting with vinegar and food colouring in the morning and some prepped timber to see how it goes as a tint over the design (possibly my second faux pas...), I'll take some photos of the ensuing chaos.

Ok so me an the ratbags played with food colouring today. I did a very rough mock up logo on some under finished pine. Colouring diluted with vinegar bled as shown with the blue in the banner. The bright colour was colour dabbed straight on with a cotton bud. It's a little vibrant, might look at some other options. The kids had fun though

Seems I can't post pics from ipad!

Hey Shoey, first up, the naughty room is an in house gag
I banish folk there for mentioning any of my pet hates... TO, either of the big sheds full of crap etc......

Why am I so anti tru oil? there are many reasons, all to do with gun stock oil belonging on gun stocks and not on guitars due to problems I have encountered with Guitars that have been attacked with the stuff... some horror stories I wont go into now..

liking the sound of your experiments with colour. just be aware that food colouring may not be light fast and may fade rather quickly.

To post pics, use the reply tab in the bottom right hand corner. it will give you the option to post three pics

    Enjoy the build!

Ah thank you sir. This is the experiment axe so I'm not expecting great results (although aiming for them).

Pictured below are my fiddlings today. Note the bleeding in the tail (blue). I had read that the colour fastness would be poor; however, that's the look that I'm after. The final is a little bright for my liking. I'll keep experimenting.

    Noice

Might be worth having an experimental dab on the heel of the neck to see how the bleeding effect goes on Rock Maple.
Rock Maple is less absorbent than most timbers...

    Thanks for the advice.

So my kit turned up today and as I was looking at it things weren't gelling. Turns out my headstock was upside down but still set up for a righty. I've accidentally been sent the first of the Jimi H type st kits. So after some emailing I've decide to keep the kit. Welcome invertocaster.
