Thread: Blue JR-1 Build

  1. #1
    Hey guys,

So from the Pitbull Guitars 2nd Anniversary sale, I snagged a JR-1. It arrived yesterday, but I didn't get my hand on it til today as my Dad accidentally took it home from work instead of dropping off to me.
This is my second build (my first one, a JM-1, is almost complete).
I have decided to go for something a little different. A few months back, when I was researching guitar kits, I stumbled on some cool stuff called "colortone". It's sort of like Wudtone, but more extravagant colours.
I've opted for a blue finish, and applied a coat this evening to the top of the guitar. Once it's dried I'm going to apply it to the sides and back, which should be soon. Luckily, colortone doesn't have such a long wait between coats, so it means I can get a bit more done sooner (YAY!).

Anyways, here's how it's come up so far.

Mike - looks like you've got a couple of glue spots there. Before you go much further, grab a wire brush (you can get a set of 3 from Bunnings for about $3) and give the clear spots a quick rub. You should be able to dab some colour into them once you've done that. I'd also run a wet rag around the rest of the body to see if any more show up then, before adding more colour. Easier to clean it up before you stain than after.

BTW - love the colour - with some shine on it, it's going to be a hot guitar!

    Cheers Brendan

Yeah, I noticed as soon as I started applying, but I figured I'd finish off the coat and rub it down a bit like is suggested with the colortone. What's the difference between the wire brushes and say, wire wool?

    Hi Mike

You really need to get rid of the glue spots completely before you proceed. You simply will not cover them irrespective of how many layers of colortone you apply.
Wire wool will NOT get rid of the glue. Trust me, we have 100's of examples that will confirm that the best route is as Brendan has suggested to get the wire brushes and give the glue a good brushing until the sodding stuff comes off.

Mike - Wire brushes will scratch up the glue and bring enough of it out of the guitar so that the stain can penetrate - doesn't need much. Wire wool will operate like fine sand paper and will rub the top, but won't penetrate and as such the stain won't penetrate. What you're looking for is something like this set: http://www.bunnings.com.au/josco-3-p...h-kit_p6114348. What you've got is eminently redeemable - depends on how much work you want to do... You hit the glue spots then sand the top back enough to "pop" (highlight) the grain and that would give you the best outcome. It'd also look pretty cool. Dark areas will be even darker and give some real depth. Alternatively, you could gently hit the glue spots with the wire brush and then try dabbing on the Colourtone. Downside is that it may still stick out a bit as slightly lighter patches. Either way - as Gav suggests, you'll need to get the glue out before any colour will stick. Sorry - no easy way to say it. I know the feeling - dropped my first build and had to sand the whole thing back. I'd got the colour spot on and nice and glossy and ready to put it together, then bang - start again...

Thanks for the advice guys. I literally would have had no idea and probably would have just made it worse and worse until I rage quit haha. And thanks a bunch for the link Brendan, I wouldn't have had a clue what I was looking for, so that was a great help. I'll pop into bunnings in the morning so I can get on to attacking that darn glue.

No worries Mike - that's what we're here for . Word of advice - you don't need to go too hard - last thing you want is a divot - give it a quick rub with the steel brush (of the three) then try a damp cloth with water - see how it takes that. If it takes water, it'll take stain.

When you see them in the flesh, the brushes are about the size of an oversized toothbrush - (maybe 3x size?) they're not huge, which is just what you want. My set came on a piece of card with a blister pack plastic top thing (so you know what to look for).

Thanks again Brendan! The wealth of advice you offer everyone on here is fantastic! Can't thank you guys enough for helping me and everyone else out on here, it definitely helps me enjoy building guitars and encourages me to continue doing so!

Cheers for the description as well, should definitely help my search! Let's hope I don't get it mixed up with the toothbrushes!

Also suggest not applying colour to top and letting dry before applying to rest of guitar. I appreciate you are worried about the "wet" side touching things but the first coat of colour will soak in real quick and should not be affected when you turn guitar over. The problem with doing it in stages is you may get tide marks where the stain takes up differently on each application. Applied sealer and stain to a floor in stages once and yep got a tide mark. Let us know how you get on.
