Thread: RC-4 First build

  1. #1

Here is a pic (Hopefully) of my first kit. Started sanding and is coming up ok. Gonna take a while with a few machine marks on edge but I have the time. Was most impressed with the tip I read elsewhere on here for using a small wire brush to remove glue marks, Worked a treat. It's all about the tricks hey.

Will be finished in natural clear wudtone for the neck and headstock and black magic woman for the body.

One quick question though, what do you use on the fretboard to finish it with? is there a specific oil or something?

Oh and one more, the sandpaper kits sold include 180, 220, and 240 grit paper but reading the guides it says to only sand to 220 when using wudtone. Is that right?

G'day Alan, welcome to the forum and nice looking kit !
There's a couple of options for fretboard oil, you can use tung oil or Dr Dux wax oil, there's a few other options that others may suggest. There's also Dingotone will have an axe wax available soon that can be used to finish the fretboard.
I normally sand to 240 grit when using wudtone so there will be less sanding later and less steel wooling between coats if you sand a bit finer. The idea is there is enough 'tooth' in the grain for the stain to grab onto.
Give the body a wet tag with a damp cloth before staining will show up any machine marks you may not have sanded well enough, sometimes they aren't obvious to the naked eye.
I suggest you do a mock build before you go much further, some other RC4 builders noticed a couple of the tuner fixing screw holes were close to the edge of the headstock
Good luck and keep sanding !

Cheers for that. And yeah did mock it up first but forgot to take picks. Tuners seem to be located ok.
Biggest concern is making sure I get the neck and bridge located right seeing as the bridge on this kit isn't pre drilled. Sure It won't be an issue I just tend to stress on things when I Haven't done them before.

I thought one shouldn't finish a rosewood fretboard?

Oils (lemon, mineral etc) and wax polishes are actually good for a rosewood fretboard. Prevents the wood from drying out and cleans off all the sweat and oil from your fingers.

    Good luck with the build.

Dingotone Guitar wax is even better

Time to hassle Adam to get it onto the site so you guys can get your sweaty hands on it!

There is always a workaround for glitches, mistakes and other Guitar building gremlins.....

Looks like a great kit Alan, and a cool finishing plan. Will be watching your build with interest.
