Thread: Hi Bat from Cairns - Neck Fitting Question

  1. #1
Hi my names Bat - I just bought a LP Spalded maple top and am looking forward to putting it all together - A quick qusetion I looked on the video guides and they showed the neck being screw straight into the body without any mods to it - my neck is sitting nearly 1/4 inch proud of the body - please see photo. I imagine it needs to sit flush do I need to plane down the back of the neck?

    Cheers - Bat

    Hi Bat,
welcome to the forum and nice kit to start on, that spalted cap looks very well figured.
I built one of these a while ago so I'll have a look at the neck heel height tonight and get back to you. Bolt on necks are a different setup to set (glued) necks.
Don't plane anything until I check mine. Sometimes the bolt ons have less neck rake angle hence the higher fingerboard.
The only way to find out is really the final part of the build when you bang the bridge posts in and string up both E strings to check heights.
I'll get back to you tonight Perth time.
In the meantime looks like you got some glue spots to sand out. Don't oversand the spalted caps are generally very thin

    Hi Bat,
this is the only photo I have available now but it looks like the fingerboard height on my build is similar.
I'll confirm the height if my fingerboard by about 7pm WST.
Note don't be too worried about a non flat cap surface (see my photo), if you try and sand out these tiny divots you will sand through the cap !

    Hi Bat

No, you do not need to plane down the back of the neck. This kit is designed to have the neck sit slightly proud of the body of the guitar. I do note that you have a fair amount of glue spots on the body of the guitar. Try and get those off before you start working on painting the body as Wokka suggested.

These Spalted Maple tops are thin but very beautiful if you do them in a transparent colour.

no worries Bat, I think you are safe to build the kit as it is ie don't plane the neck heel.
If sanding the glue spots with 180 grit paper doesn't remove them, you may need to scrub them with a small wire brush.
Looks like you got a winner cap there, should come up a treat.
What stain colour you got in mind ?
