Lads - if you're going down this path - check out the ToneRiders http://www.pitbullguitars.com/?page_id=4112 - may not have the chick attracting lipstick look, but I think they'll win hands down in the sound stakes. Having heard the Gavmeister in person waxing lyrical about them - I gather they're top notch.

Psst! The Tele neck pickup isn't actually a lipstick tube, it just looks similar... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipstick_pickup

Try Danelectro or any of the Dan' made Silvertone, Coral, Harmony, etc instruments for the real thing. There are also lipstick pickups to retro-fit Stats, Jazz Basses too which are shorter and possibly wound differently to maintain similar resistance? (and often considerably more expensive...)

I just bought a pair (single tubes for neck + bridge position - perhaps one is reverse wound to get a humbucking effect in series, otherwise I'm not sure why they would distinguish between them?) with close to original Danelectro resistance of 5.1k/5.2k pretty cheaply (US$34 with postage). You can get them even cheaper than that but with uncertain specs and different mounts.

I confess that part of my interest in building a Danelectric clone bass is in these unusual and very retro looking pickups! :-)
