Thread: ES-1G with a few additions

  1. #1
    Hey guys,

I thought I would post some pics of my latest build of an ES-1G kit.

As with my LP-1 kit I used Wudtone but this time I went with a custom colour. The colour is a mixture of Azure Lagoon and Dark Onyx. The Dark Onyx was used to darken it up and add a bit more depth. The quirk with this colour is that it seems to change colour depending on what light you have at the time. I have seen all sorts of blues and even emerald green colours which makes things interesting. It also seems give an almost metallic look to the maple cap as well.

The neck was finished with 4 coats of colourless and then with 4 coats of neck finish. 3 coats of satin black was then sprayed onto the face of the headstock. Having never spray painted any guitar I was a bit hesitant and worried about runs etc. In the end the mask did its job and the edge is near perfect.

Originally I had the idea of fitting a Bigsby and roller bridge but decided to use that option for another project down the track.

For the setup, I bit the bullet and purchased the Katana neck levelling system from Japan. All I can say is that it is an awesome system and very easy to use. I also purchased the Little Bone as well which does a great job of recrowning the frets after levelling. Even with a pretty heavy set of strings I was able to get a nice low action which makes this guitar really smooth to play.

    Upgrades to the kit are as follows;

    - Tonerider P90 pickups in a Humbucker case
    - Nickel surrounds
    - Switchcraft 3 way switch and output jack
    - CTS audio taper pots all round
    - Black Bee Oil-in-Paper tone caps
    - 3 ply pick guard and ES335 pick guard bracket
    - Tusq nut
    - Shielded "vintage" wiring
    - Set of D'Addario Jazz "Light" strings

From an untrained ear (make that partly deaf as well), I think it sounds great. Very warm, smooth tones.

Im going to see if I can get a video posted of this thing in action but by someone that can seriously play guitar. Might even get him to use it during one of his more Jazzy gigs. Will have to see.

    Cheers

    Alex

Thanks Tim...probably the most frustrating build to date but worth it in the end...and no, it wasn't the wiring that made me wanna throw it through a wall lol

Thanks Stan and Wokka...They are a great kit. Definitely learnt a few things building this one, a little bit of a challenge compared to the LP..

As far as the colour goes..i'll have to pass on all the thanks to DB. What I ended up with isn't exactly the colour I was after but that's the risk you take with a custom colour. In the end, im extremely happy with the colour. I think what happened is that the test colour was applied to a different timber thus giving different tones.

Sorry, I posted in the wrong thread before. I thought I was was in this one and not the gallery.

Anyway, what is your opinion on those Rebel 90's. What pots and caps did you use? =)

And I know why your awesome 335 really catches my eye.

    Here is my main guitar.

It's a L.E blueburst. As pretty as it is, it's nothing after seeing yours. You have gone 1 better than the factory could do.
