As I couldn't find one elsewhere, I thought I'd start a thread here under "Inspiration" for those quotes from "music-type folks in the know" that provide hope for us "lesser mortals"!![]()
To get it rolling, I thought I'd provide one of my favourites that kind of sums up the difference between a guitarists "gear" and a guitarists "sound"
It comes from Nuno Bettencourt - a little acknowledged great guitarist from Extreme.
1991 and Bettencourt had been invited to an undisclosed rehearsal by Dweezil Zappa - turns out to be Van Halen rehearsing for their (then) upcoming album ...
"He (Eddie Van Halen) was so welcoming, for a guy who was one of my major influences, he was so open. And the whole time I was watching them him play I was thinking "There it is! There's that tone right in front of me! If I could only f*cking play that rig on my own!". And then it came through! During a break, everyone else was out of the room and Eddie wanted to try a new wah-pedal and asks me if I want to plug-in! So here I am playing Eddies rig and my whole life I've wanted to be able to sound like him. I'm playing his guitar into his amp though his pedals and everything, and when I started playing I was so disappointed - I still sounded like me!"
"I learned pretty quickly that day that is doesn't make a difference - well it does sort of - but you will always sound like you! You can add a different colour or different pickup but your DNA is going to come out of you! (After all), I had Eddie Van Halen's rig, all of it, right in front of me, the "dream rig" and I still sound like me. Unfortunately"
